The Transformation of k.d. lange - Singing "Hallelujah" at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Opening Ceremonies

I have to say I was riveted.  Singing Leonard Cohen's version of "Hallelujah" the focus was on (?) The voice was amazing - the song emotional...positively mesmerizing...but who was it?  I thought 'Wayne Newton'? Is he Canadian?...I know there was a tremendous amount of focus on the 'aboriginal culture'........but Wayne Newton?  Hmmm, thinking.........he looks awfully good for his age.  But Wayne Newton?  Then at the end of the song they thanked 'k.d. lange'.........and I just about fell off my chair.  What did you think?  I must be totally out of touch...duh

I am a big fan of K.D. Laing and have always loved the Leonard Cohen song! And I had to laugh that you did not recognize her, she is national treasure for you all! ;-)

I've never noticed before but you are right they have the same facial structure LOL. She does have a beautiful voice. I've heard that song a lot lately. The Canadian Tenors sang it on Oprah last week with Celine Dion.

I'm embarrassed to admit this but those who know me know I don't know jack about music, so this shouldn't surprise anyone.  I couldn't remember while watching whether k.d. was a man or a woman.  I seemed to remember her being a woman but after seeing the performance I simply wasn't sure.  I had to google her!  Thanks for this post... now I don't feel so stupid.

Liz, thanks for posting this.  It is a magnificent song and she sings it beautifully.  All of a sudden I have hear it sung a few times lately. It is popular on American idol.  I have no comment on what she looks like.  That is quite a shock.

ROFL! I knew about this a long time ago. She is now a HE! Well, in looks anyway. I don't want to know about anything else. But those pictures sure are scarey! As for the music, I'm always listening to CD's of worship music, so I'm kinda out of the loop  =/

Hi Liz, I have always been a huge K.D. Lang fan.  I've haven't seen her lately but seeing her at the Opening Ceremonies was a treat . She has a terrific voice and it was a beautiful song.

I forgot to mention, when I saw k.d. I couldn't help but think of her song "Big Boned Gal" from the album Absolute Torch and Twang - one of my favorite albums of hers :-)

KD is so amazing. I remember her when she use to perform in Vancouver a lot with her "punk rock hill billy country girl act. I also remember her on Johnny Carson for the first time doing the same. Carson was flabbergasted.

Liz - WOW ... she did the most amazing job ... don't feel bad Barrie had to tell me who it was she has changed quit a bit over the years and while I listen to her I don't remember the last time I watched her perform anywhere.

Gorgeous, hair raising singing by KD Lang - singing a song written by just about the best composer on the planet, Leonard Cohen, how could it not be the most exciting combination.  That song now belongs to her.  But yes, I was just watching an old Lucille Ball rerun and a young Wayne Newton was on it - they are almost identical.
