Unfortuantely the DPS drivers license office in Katy was closed on January 29, 2010. The city of Katy for some reason declined to renew their lease. The office was located at 6202 George Bush Drive and it has been mentioned in the past that the drivers license office was in need of significantly larger space to operate efficiently. The DPS is currently searching for new space in the Katy area. Officials stated that they needed a 3,500-4,000 sq. ft facility with ample available parking and which also contains an area where testing can be conducted. Officials say that they have no idea how long it will take for them to find a replacement facility in the Katy area. That is bad news for Katy and surrounding area residents.
Any records on pending licenses and other applications have been moved to the DPS office located at 12220 S. Gessner in Houston. Individuals with anything that was pending with the Katy office now have to go to the South Gessner location. Katy residents needing to renew their license now can also go to two other locations being 4545 Dacoma St in Houston and 1601 Yownhurst Dr. in Rosenberg. I personally would recommend trying the Rosenberg location.
I personally have been to the old Katy office a couple times in the past and I was aways happy with the service and speed the workers at this office provided their customers. I have lived in the Houston area now for a long time and outside of the Katy office the other Driver License offices I have gone to where in plain english absolutely terrible. My own license has to be renewed in two year so I hope the DPS can find a new facility in Katy before my license needs to be renewed and I hope the same work force returns to Katy.
