Zoey the Cool Cat has been sleeping all day, but she has gotten up just in time to wish everyone a Zoey the Cool Cat's professional staff of two will be going out later on to have a Valentine's Day meal somewhere in order to continue to help stimulate the economy. Meanwhile, though, did you know that Valentine was a priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, ca. 270 A.D.? Claudius II, born Marcus Aurelius Claudius, was also known as Claudius the Cruel because the Roman Empire was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns under his rule. Claudius was having difficulty getting men to join his armies because, he believed, they were unwilling to leave their wives and families. Well, duh, as someone once said. Claudius proceeded to ban all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine defied Claudius and kept performing marriages in secret. Legend has it that while in jail, Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine." However, as with most of early history, there are many stories explaining who Valentine was (there are at least three prominent ones in the Catholic Church) and how Valentine's Day came to be. Many of the stories about St. Valentine appear to have originated with Geoffrey Chaucer. The important thing to remember, however, is that we get to gratuitously eat chocolate today.

When his actions were discovered, Claudius ordered Valentine's death. The Prefect of Rome condemned Valentine to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off, a sentence that was carried out on February 14.

Thanks for filling us in on the history. My wife liked it. All I know is roses and chocolate make the world go around for me in my world around the middle of February. But, it was interesting.
Hi Jim,
Leave it to the Romans (Italians, like myself) to give us a story to remember!!! Learned some history today, THANKS!!! BTW: I love your kitty holding the remote control... ;>))
Hey, everyone.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I have read all the comments, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!
I'm still fighting to get an escrow closed that was supposed to close last week. As soon as I get everyone to jump through all these hoops, I hope to get back to being more regular here at ActiveRain rather than waiting until the weekend to do all my posts and reciprocal comments.
Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!
If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.
Hope all is well with everyone.
