Staged Makeovers continuously keeps an eye on the competition. In Ohio, staging has not yet become a huge industry and many still have not heard of it.  The bad thing is that we still have to educate many of our clients, but the good thing is the competition isn't strong. Some of our tactics for checking out the competition include:

  • Reading newspapers and cutting out others ads
  • Visiting local competitors websites
  • Surveying competitors pricing locally and throughout the country
  • Forming alliances with competitors

What we have learned is that at least half of our local competitors have gone out of business in the past year. Many lack websites. Pricing in our area is comparatively low, especially when compared to other states and metropolitan areas. And more and more realtors are also attempting double duty as stagers.

How is your competition doing? How do you keep up or go beyond the competition when they are dropping out? What makes your company stand out?

Good thoughts Rachel.  I have my fingers crossed that staging will take off like a rocket here.  So far, work is consistent, but its like pulling teeth to get the point across.  I'm looking forward to the day when I'm so busy I have to turn down work!

I had one of my competitors over this weekend for a barbeque!  I don't mind having competition at all as it keeps me on my toes.

Rachel, here in Calgary staging is starting to take off so there is plenty of work for all the stagers here.  Sometimes we lose jobs because our bid is too high - but we just go on to the next job.  Most clients have found our company on Active Rain or our other website.  So I definitely agree with you that a website is crucial.  Betty

Terry and Penny - Once upon a time, we reached that point. It was only briefly. We were so busy we had no time for marketing. Then suddenly we didn't have any business coming in. I learned my lesson. I'm back to pulling teeth.

Kathy - That's so fun! That's the way it should be.

Betty - Unfortunately in Ohio, homes are very affordable. Too many people don't think houses priced in our market should be staged. I say, all homes need our service. Its just a matter of getting them to see the value of staging here. I absolutely love the fact that you are getting clients from ActiveRain and your website!!! It is very encouraging.

Staging to sell has not really taken off in this part of Texas.  I often have more interest in Redesign services which is fine with me but Staging is just not as important service as I believe it should be here but even with Realtors knowing the benefits they sometimes have the same misconceptions in a really good market it is not necessary but to get a better selling price it is very necessary.  I have several friends that are Realtors and even though they recommend me, it's just not a "given" in this market.  I am trying to change that but it is just going to happen one house at a time.  I will check out your websites, thanks for your blog.

Joni - I believe that the Texas market is similar to the Ohio market in that it is such an affordable place to own real estate. Sometimes it is hard to get a realtor to see the value when the homes aren't considered "expensive" enough. It's silly, but realtors are frugal when it comes to investing their own money into a sale, especially when they work on a percenage. Stay persistent. The market is rough all around the country. Use this to your benefit. Good luck and thanks for checking out www.stagedmakeovers.com
