Ghost Writers? I think not.

OK, I have to chime in on this one, but my thoughts are too long for just a comment. Anyway, that is where my blog subjects most often come from, the online conversation.

Don’t miss Jessica Sulliman’s great blog entry: Pay Per Blog is it Kosher

You’ll find a great thread of opinions and conversation…

My answer to Jessica’s question regarding the use of Ghost Writers for your Active Rain blog;

So, fellow ActiveRainers, what's the word? Kosher or No Good?

I say, “No Good”, here’s why…

As Nick from DotLoop commented, “After all, a blog is a ‘web log’, it's your online diary.  Would you want someone else writing your own diary?” I agree with this. It’s like saying I think I need a little religion today, “would you mind going to church for me? I don’t have the time.”

Okay, hold on… I’m not an old fuddy duddy, nor a purest, and I realize things change and we do a lot of mashing up these days. But in the spirit of tradition, blog was born out of something different than marketing or advertising. Not that there is anything wrong with either, I love them both. It’s just that ‘blogging’ is neither. Blogging is one voice speaking out, “Here’s what I think about this or that.” Then the conversation ensues or it doesn’t.

Blogging can be a form of marketing in that you’re sharing yourself online; your thoughts, experiences, passion, and points of view, but it is your voice, your conversation, your diary. If your blog develops a following because people find your conversation interesting, then yes this is good marketing. You become an authority or an influencer to your readership when they engage and agree or disagree with you.

If you are using a ghost blogger to create your diary then you are not blogging. If you’re simply pumping content for search engines under the auspices that it’s your voice then you are running a deception and misusing the medium. (I'm not talking about corporate blogs, different animal.)

Anyway, what’s the point? If you’re using other writers, give them credit. You’ll benefit. You’ll be associated with them and their content (which I hope is good) and you both win the Google Juice awards. After all, the reader came to your site for the content. If you can afford to hire a good copywriter to create your marketing and advertising pieces to build your business, you’re smart and ahead of the game. But it’s not blogging.

Social Media is not just blogging, but blogging is certainly part of your Social Media presence. Be real.

S.H. Simmons, author and humorist, relates this anecdote.

(From: What is Marketing)

"If a young man tells his date she's intelligent, looks lovely, and is a great conversationalist, he's saying the right things to the right person and that's marketing. If the young man tells his date how handsome, smart and successful he is -- that's advertising. If someone else tells the young woman how handsome, smart and successful her date is -- that's public relations."

We’re all here on ActiveRain as participants in the expanded reality of the life online. We all hope to benefit somehow by being part of a community that encourages learning, sharing, and experimentation. We all want to master our presence online as best we can to create relationships and business, at least to the point that we optimize opportunity. Many here have done that very well.

I ask you, if I imply that these writings from this my personal blog are mine, from the desk of me and by me, and they are not… How then can I possibly ask, “What’s my return on investment?”

Personally, I won’t take that risk. There are a lot of very smart people on line. I for one won’t under estimate them. If I make a fool of myself in my blog, it’s authentic. If I’m fortunate enough to have a following, they’ll chime in and let me know what they think.

Thanks Jessica, you got me thinking.

Howdy and Evenen Rene

Back when I first joined the AR community, in order for the content to be called your own, you had to actually write and post it youself. And then when AR started charging the new members a monthly fee, then AR started saying if a member has payed for the blog post to be written, that its also their own content. You can see the members that pays someone to write and post for then, by the number of posts that are then that month under the Aechives. There are members that are showing over a 100 blog posts in a months time. I'm very active, I spend over 50 hours a week in the community, and I have not been able to even post 80 in one month.

I say No Good, and the AR staff should put a stop to it.

I agree with the no to ghost writers here on AR... it just simply doesn't make sense and doesn't quite ring true to why we're here. Yet, I do know personally a few very prolific bloggers here on AR that are amazing and authentic. I envy their resoluteness, dedication, and prolificness. I pale in comparison.

I agree and that is partially why I don't write as often as I should and I am assuming the same goes for you. But, I know there are a lot out there and if it is a matter of time, they have to decide what is important to them.

George & Arlene... I don't post as often as would like either... I've received a lot responses to this one, though only you and Dale have responded. It's kind of interesting, the silence if almost deafening. Wonder what that means. Yet the responses (not you here) seem to miss my point, and maybe I didn't make it very clear. A personal blog is a personal blog, simple... and if you use ghost bloggers it's no longer a personal blog... essentially that's the point I'm trying to make. I thought that was a very clear premise, yet there seems to be confusion on that point. I'll have to think about that some more...

You are correct that it is a personal blog, but people are using it a business blog, just as twitter, facebook and other social media sites have become much more than personal sites. Some feel they need to leverage that with ghost writers.

But, read the posts here, most aren't about their everyday business or themselves and their family, they are only trying to sell themselves or their business. I think once they only do that it no longer becomes a personal blog, it becomes a business blog.

But, I think you got your point across and I do have to wonder if the reason so many didn't respond is because they use reblogging as a crouch and that to me is the same as using a ghost writer, you are just giving them the credit, that is the only difference.

George & Arlene... does seem I touched a nerve here. I don't look down on those that use Ghost Writers, and there's nothing wrong with a business blog. Again, my point was, it's not a personal blog if you're using Ghost Writers... and you're taking a risk if you're pretending. The law of the net, as I have experienced is, being authentic is probably the most important thing of all. Thanks for your thoughts. Much appreciated.

At what point do some claim it to be a personal blog or a business blog? How many people have never posted a personal thing here in the rain? Mine personally is a personal blog and that is the path of decided to follow because I believe people hire people they feel they know and like.

But, so many others say just look how much business I'm doing, hire me based on that and then have other people post on their behalf.

Hi Rene!

Thanks for the link and comments! I am still thinking on this one.  I do see some value with statistical blogs that don't typically involve personal content, but that's about the extent of it. Can you imagine if you had a blog FEATURED that wasn't even your own writing??

One thing is for sure....I will never be so naive to assume that someone else's blog TRULY is THEIR blog again....I will always be somewhat skeptical!

I love the line in "Big Trouble in Little China, ... "I must be incredibly naive", and everyone chimes in, "Yes, you are!"...

Todd: You are the master blogger... The only distinction I put out was, if this is your personal blog why would you want a ghost writer... business blogs, corp blogs, that's fine... I am talking about personal blogs... and you get it... Social Media rules if you show up... (will skip lecture) because you already get that............

We have so much work to do, and I am grateful you are one of those I get to collaborate with in the grand experiment...
