Yup, Los Angeles is the birthplace of the French Dipped Sandwich.  It happened in 1918 when Philippe Mathieu dropped  the French Roll he was using to make a sandwich into a roasting pan just out of the oven filled with drippings.  The policeman he was making the sandwich for said he'd take the sandwich anyway.  The next day, he came back with some friends and they all wanted to try those "dipped" sandwiches.  Thus the French Dipped sandwich was born.

Philippe's is nestled in Los Angeles just across from the Postal Annex, train station, just up the street from Olvera Street and backs up to Chinatown.  It's become a great place for locals to gather and for folks like my best buddy and fellow Rainer,  Lynda Eisenmann and myself to gravitate to every time we get up to Los Angeles.  Lynda introduced me to this place about five years ago...and now there's no turning back!  If Lynda and I are even within 15 miles of the place, all we have to do is look at one another and whoever is driving just heads straight for the Philippe's.

Outside the sign proudly says, "established 1908".  Yup, they'll  soon be celebrating 100 years of serving up great food at great prices.  Inside, it's not quite like anything else in L.A.  There's community seating at long tables with stools and benches, sawdust on the floors and a very unique serving style.  You step up to a glass, refrigerated counter---like one you'd see in a butcher shop.  Inside are delectable treats like fresh cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, tapioca, custard, pigs knuckles, pickled eggs, huge dill pickles and other interesting treats.  Behind the counter are ladies wearing old-fashioned waitress outfits and those little white starched hats that the gals at the lunch counters wore in the 40's and 50's.  People line up to be waited on in lines adjacent to the servers on the other side of the counter.

Before you even walk in the door, there's the wonderful aroma of Sunday roast in the oven.  The French Dipped Sandwiches are available in Roast Lamb, Roast Turkey, Roast Beef, Roast Pork or ham.  You have a choice of with or without cheese and single or double dip.  The meat juices are not served in a cup like most restaurants do.  They go directly onto the bun---double dip is the best!  The lady behind the counter is your carver.  She carves your choice of meat from the roast that was freshly cooked that day.  She dishes up your side orders, loads your drinks on the tray and slides a small tray toward you with your bill.  Usually, for two sandwiches, two side orders, and two drinks will run about $12 with tip...unless you decide to sample one of the great beers or a glass of wine.

It's a feast!  You find a table to share and sit down to enjoy.  They make gallons of hot mustard every week and it's served up in little glass jars on each table.  Sit down, take a bite and prepare to be WOWED!  It's just simply incredible food.  Served with pride, prepared the old fashioned way---no nukes---no frozen anything.  Just big old ovens, everything seasoned to perfection and lovingly prepared the old fashioned way with plenty of time, and loving care.

The Pork Roast and Roast Beef are my favorites.  We usually get one of each and split them.  It's a treat you'll not soon forget...You'll be imitating our Governator Arnold, saying, "I'll be back!"  Next time you're in Los Angeles, stop by Philippe's.  They're just East of the 101 Freeway and Downtown at 1001 North Alameda Street in Los Angeles

There are also old-time phone booths---they still work---and a candy counter where you can buy candy that you'll remember from your childhood if you're a child of the fifties.  Things like Big Hunks, Bit ‘O Honey, Abba Zabba, Clove Gum...well you get the picture.  Just plain fun!

Marlene,

Wow, great post. And your photos are wonderful, even the picutres of pictures turned out really well. I think the ice tea was only 45cents last time. We only spend more when we have a beer.

Btw, thanks for the mention, you know it's one of my favorites! And it's such an eclectic group of customers, a little of everything here.  Seems like everytime we're there we bump into someone we know. Last time, clients of mine from Orange Co. You never know who you're going to see there.

Marlene.... awesome story...  my first taste of the French Dip was at Arby's in 1983. Why can I remember this?  I started snow skiing at the time and my dad took my friend and I skiing.  We stopped at Arby's and I had my first French Dip.... thanks for the history lesson.... it was cool.

Philippe's Is the thing that I miss most about LA. I have a standing order for 2 double dips with any friends or family going to LA. "Don't come back up to Amador County without my Philippe's"

My mother tells us that she knew that my dad thought she was special when on a date, he bought her a lamb snadwitch, her favorite, and a nickle more than the beef. When he passed last year the invites had already gone out for their SIXTY-FIFTH wedding anaversary. Philippe's is the real deal.

Man I miss Philippe's!

Sally - Thanks for stopping in for a read tonight.  Thanks too for letting me know it's Jason's B-day.  I'm a huge fan!

Ray - Glad you enjoyed it.  I love nostalgia---especially great food nostalgia!

Hey Buddy! Lynda, you know how I feel about this place.  And, yes, we do seem to run into people every time we go there.  It's pretty amazing since it's about 30 miles from home.  I was happy with the photos, too.  I know people must have been pretty sure I was a little wacko taking pictures of pictures...or they didn't notice at all...probably the latter.

Jeff - Next time you're in So Cal. you really must try this.  There's simply nothing like it anywhere else.  Glad it brought back a fond memory of your first ski trip, too.

Joe-I'm so sorry to get your taste buds going for a Philippe's double dip when it's too late to go there!  Maybe tomorrow?

Micahel - What a lovely story about your Mom and Dad.  65 years is an incredible milestone.  I'm so sorry to hear of your Father's passing.    And, yes, Philippe's is the real deal...and it's sounds like you are, too!

Bob & Carolin - Next time you're in L.A. you must give it a try.

Your post brought back memories. I use to eat at Philippe's when I lived in CA a few years back. I've seen moved to Washington and even though there a few things I don't miss about Southern CA (traffic, gangs, crime, traffic, and traffic). I do miss the variety of food available in CA. I would kill for in an In-and-out buger, el pollo loco chicken, and some good mexican food.

Hi Alex,

It is a trade off.  My husband and I lived in WA for 8 years.  There was only one Mexican Restaurant that even came close to actuasl Mexican Food.  It was called Los Hermanos.  I remember that the tortilla at the grocery store were in the freezer.  And, to get to Cilantro, I had to go to the Pike Place in Seattle.  I know things are changing there.  Hope you get El Pollo Loco and In and Out soon.  Surprised there isn't at least one decent Mesican restaurant by now!

Now for what I miss in WA - I miss the sourdough crab & swiss sandwiches on the pier, the different style of Almond Chicken at the Great Wall in Tacoma.  And, BBQ'd Oly oysters!  The biggest thing I miss is the great berries-blackberries, blueberries and raspberries...mmmm.

Wow!  I just happened to find this string of blogs about Philippe's, and can't resist the temptation to put my two cents worth in.

I have actually been going to Philippe's longer than it's been there.  When I was a kid my parents and paternal grandparents used to go when it was still at its old location.  Philippe's had to move to its current location when the freeway was built and the old building had to be demolished to make room for the freeway.  Philippe's was always a magical place.  In my mind it was even better then than now (and it is unbeatable now!).  At least five and possibly six generations (I can't verify six) of my family have been Philippe's patrons.

Somewhere I read that the first floor of the building where Philippe's is now used to house a machine shop.  Can anyone guess what the second floor was used for, at least according to the story I read?

John - What a small world, huh?  It sounds like Philippe's is a quate a family tradition.  My guess on the upstairs would be a dance studio.  I love this kind of trivia.
11:19pm • #27
Well, Marlene, what I had read or heard did not indicate a dance studio.  I can not remember what the source was so I'm reluctant to repeat it.  Keep guessing.

By the way, there is another restaurant in Los Angeles that disputes Philippe's claim to have originated the French Dipped Sandwich.  Cole's (if still there. I haven't been there in years), a few blocks south of Philippe's also claims to be the home of the original French Dipped Sandwich.  I don't think it was ever as good as Philippe's though.

Hi Georgina, Glad to impart a little L.A. trivia.  I love learning about things like this.  The simple things we can take for granted if we're not careful. :-)

Hi Lisa - Thanks so much for giving it an honorable mention.  There's another one you might want to check out too on The Break of Dawn Restaurant in Laguna Hills.  Have a great week.
