Today is fat Tuesday, also known as Fastnacht Day or Mardi Gras .
The traditional day of pigging out before the start of Lent (which begins tomorrow, Ash Wednesday) and is marked by parades and extravagant costumes, most famously in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Although many Americans often associate Fat Tuesday with New Orleans, it was actually Mobile, Alabama that originated the U.S. celebration while under French rule in 1703.
