Virgnia Beach is considering installing curbside meters-similiar to parking meters- that donars can insert coins in. The money will be used to help the homeless. The head of the Resort Advisory Commission, Jim Davis said the idea is discourage panhandling. The money will be funneled to a charity such as the United Way. The city of Denver has something similiar and they have raised about $100,000 a year with it.
I guess this would sound like a great idea if the money was able to be tracked by the general public as a way of auditing the program. However, isn't that what the local church is for?
Better loitering, panhandling laws AND enforcement. San Francisco is very easy on panhandlers and it has ruined the tourists industry there
Baa..Great idea but It might reduce the homeless population if they buy housing but I can't see how it's going to discourage panhandlers unless they're getting the money. Besides, where are all these homless panhandlers in VaBeach?? I rarely see them. Figured the police are just running them off.
hey I love visiting SanFrancisco, the gays, homless, hippies. They don't bother me at all. In fact I actually feel more safe there after dark than in Virginia beach.
I see them all the time at stop lights in Virginia Beach (London Bridge, Rosemont and Holland) and a lot at the Rosemot 264 exit ramp. Not so much at the oceanfront, at least THIS time of year. Many I see are regulars.
I like the idea, I think it would great to have total donations listed each week in the Virginian Pilot or Homes section.
