I live in Asheville North Carolina, a Blue Ridge Mountain destination for many - and a place where people like moving to.

Beer is a big attraction here.  And as a beer lover I'd say alot of it is really good.  For a town of about 75,000 we've got micro breweries, brew pubs, make your own brew shops, and a Brews Cruise (not a bad idea if you're gonna be drinking - let somebody else do the drivin'). http://www.brewscruise.com/asheville/

Some people think of Asheville as that place with Floridians, senior citizens, liberals, freaks and Billy Graham (Well he's not exactly in Asheville, but the county).  Now that's what I call diversity!

And I think all of them drink beer.  So I'm wondering, "If people dream of moving to Napa or Sonoma for the wine and food, will buyers want to move to Asheville for the beer?"

Not too far out I would say.

We've got the Asheville Brewing Company: http://www.ashevillebrewing.com/ - a great place to drink and one of their locations also has movies in a down home theater where you can eat and drink and see $3.00 flicks.

There's the French Broad Brewing Company: http://www.frenchbroadbrewery.com/  - Been around nearly a decade now and going strong.  Catch some music there too!

Gotta give props to the Highland Brewing Company: http://www.highlandbrewing.com/  Been around a while and easy to find in markets, too.

Another hometown favorite is the Pisgah Brewing Company (ok, the brewery is in Black Mountain, but that's our "cousin" in the county): http://pisgahbrewing.com/

This next place is a pub, but the brewery is close by: Pisgah Brewing Company (You can find their beer at Jack of the Wood - another good food and music place)  http://www.jackofthewood.com/ales.htm

This is just a few, and certainly not all. Gotta mention is The Wedge: http://www.wedgebrewing.com/ (they're down in the River Arts District (in the Wedge Building) - brews are great, say Hi to Tim, and visit with the artists and locals.

And if you want something "exotic" there's always Bruisin' Ales http://www.bruisin-ales.com/ (they've got over 800 varieties of beers (yes, I said 800!)

Or stop by The Thirsty Monk http://www.monkpub.com/ where Belgian Beer rules - with 14 varieties in draught, and a new location just opened in south Asheville.

People from other places who come here say "This place reminds me of Portland...or Boulder...or Fairfax, CA, or Ukiah, CA...(to name a few).  Except those that come from Charlotte, or Chapel Hill, or even Charleston SC -- they know this is ASHEVILLE - where people come to drink good beer, listen to good music, and some even end up buying good homes here.   And bringing their friends.  Maybe you!

I'll drink to that...

I frequently come to Asheville! And I like beer! I'm going to have to get in touch so we can share a frosty brew next time I head out that way!

That is about as convincing a sales approach I've heard in a long time.  Got me thinking of relocating  but I am near Fairfax and all the good Bay Area brews.  Cheers! ~ Doug (ps It certainly made me thirsty but it is just a little past two here...must wait.)

Great marketing Evelyn. I love exploring the pubs in downtown Asheville when I get up there (not often enough). You have a great "little" city to promote. It must be awfully easy to close once you get people to visit. Best of luck!

Well thanks to all of you who commented!  I thought it was too late in the day...

Craig - let me know when you're out this way and we'll go to the new place in town - The Lab

Cari/Doug - I used to live in Marin so I appreciate your thinking this is a convincing message - I gotta say, for a town of this size it's got LOTS going for it.  (but I'm a Raider Chic at heart, even if they're in the tank)

Bob - Think of me when you raise your glass tonight!

Craft brews are certainly more interesting than the major brands. It looks like you've got a large collection with a lot of variety. Could keep you busy trying them all out. You put together a fine list. Enjoy!

Wow - didn't know that Asheville beer was such a great attraction.  We'll have to stop by and try it out the next time in the area.  Looking forward to a visit.

Been living in the Bay Area on & off since 1974.  Grew up a Raiders fan...the 49ers and now just hope either shows up to play.  Next year will be better!  Was going through listings yesterday and found one of interest in your old stomping grounds.  I could certainly drink some good beer here. ~Doug

PS: You could afford some fine ales with the commission on this one!

Hey Doug - yes, that would a nice fee.  (I hear Andre Agassi's old place in Tib/Belvedere is being torn down - for a smaller place - now that's money!)

David - I just came across another article which said Asheville was tied with Portland for Beer City USA - read it here:  http://www.exploreasheville.com/press-room/News-Releases/asheville-named-beer-city-usa/index.aspx

Had to stop writing somewhere, but this is good!

Evelyn,

GREAT Post!  I grew up in Asheville, out near Leicester and it wasn't as lively downtown like it is today.  My Mom is still in Asheville, Dad in Fletcher, Brother in Sylva, so I get back up there as often as possilble.  You can take the girl out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the girl!!!

I DO LOVE going downtown when I'm visiting...might even move back one day, who knows.

Cheers!!!  It's 5 o'clock somewhere, right?!

Hi Evelyn -- many of us love our beer next door in Hendersonville as well -- me being one!  Great promotion for Asheville!  These mountains are gorgeous and the beer great.
