Well, it's that time of year again -- Money Magazine has released it's annual list of The Best Places to Live in the U.S.

It seems that everyone is writing about their hometowns making the cut:

It's been very nteresting reading everyone's blogs and learning about different great towns across the country:

Diane Aurit writes about Mooresville, NC in Mooresville, NC on Money Magazine's List of Best Places to Live

Ava Lugg gives a shout out to her hometown of Suwanee, GA in Suwanee named by Money Magazine

Angus in Naperville boasts of Naperville, IL -- #2 on the list in Best Place to Live? Of Course!

Sandra & Dan Cummings are excited to announce North Haven Connecticut Makes Money Magazines Top 100 List

Joyce Windschitl of Chaska, Minnesota is Proud of where I live... Money Magazine Rates us 8th in the country...

Missy Caulk announces that Saline, MI Named in Money Magazine's Top 100 Places to Live

Anthony Stokes Pereira jumps in citing that Nanuet [NY] ranks No. 24 on 'best places' survey

Chas Morgenstern from North Carolina mentions both Apex and Holly Springs in The Results Are In: 2 Triangle Towns Rank High on National List

I SCOURED THE MONEY MAGAZINE LIST AND COULD NOT FIND MY TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.

Why not I thought in a panic?  Alexandria's a great place to live!  After all we're close to D.C. but with lower taxes.  We've got lots of history -- yes George Washington did sleep here.  We have high-paying jobs, some beautiful homes, great restaurants, Old Town Alexandria with the charm of cobblestone streets and historic townhouses, great parks, the Potomac River, The George Washington Masonic Memorial, Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, low unemployment, friendly people, and more!

Then I discovered the reason -- Money Magazine only rated towns with a population of between 7,500 and 50,000 people.  Alexandria has over 100,000 residents. We don't qualify as a big city either.

But, lo and behold, Money Magazine does have ratings based on other criteria.

Guess what I found -- ALEXANDRIA IS NUMBER 10 ON THE LIST FOR SKINNIEST AREAS!

Money Magazine ranked U.S. counties by average Body Mass Index or BMI.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.  Calculate your BMI.

Alexandria City residents weighed in at an average BMI of 25.44.

Topping the list are:

Marin County, CA
Blaine County, ID
La Plata County, CO
Teton County, WY
Garfield County, CO
San Francisco County, CA
Boulder County, CO
Los Alamo County, NM
Summit County, UT
& Alexandria City, VA

Not only that, but nearby Fairfax County, VA weighed in at number 15, Montgomery County, MD was #21, and neighboring Arlington County was #22.

In fact, besides for Martin County, FL, these areas were the only ones to make the list on the East Coast, making me believe that the trimmest, fittest, most beautiful and sexiest East Coasters live in the metropolitan D.C. area.

Come see for yourself!  I'm proud to live in a hometown where people seem to care about their health and fitness!

Brian,

Great Article.....Skinniest Counties?  How did Money Magazine calculate that, went around measuring BMI with the Money Magazine calipers?  Just a vision that went through my head.  Have a good evening!!

You gotta keep your eyes open Armando.  Summertime is a great time to see fit people, the wear less so you can tell better.  Interesting post Brian.  I sometimes wonder why magazines like these lists.  There are many besides Money that do it.

David:  In think that in the same vein as Letterman's Top Ten Lists, people like concise bullet point articles and rankings.  It's like U.S. News & World Report College Rankings -- that magazine trails far behind Newsweek and Time, but that particular issue is a top seller every year.

And summertime is a good time to see fit people -- especially if you get a chance to go to the pool or the beach.

Tracy: Thanks for your comment.

Tchaka:  Ah yes, but you used to live here, and you have to remember that the models on South Beach aren't exactly the norm -- South Florida has a large retirement community so you have to factor that in to the mix.  I'm sure Tchaka that you do add to the skinniest and best loving quotient down in Florida!
