I was reading an article about insurance companies that didn't pay claims after the 2005 Katrina disaster in New Orleans.  Which made me wonder about my own insurance company I use for homeowners insurance and who I recommend to others.  Since my rates are what I consider low; I wanted to make sure I wasn't compromising service for low premiums.  So I went to this site http://www.naic.org/cis/ One of the best ways to get an insurer's reputation is to check its complaint ratio - its percentage of total customer complaints divided by its market share, as measured by total premiums. The lower the ratio, the better a company's performance.  Check it out.

I am insured by State Farm, and I am in the middle of a pipe burst repair.  I was covered for everything but paying my plumber.  My neighbor across the street was covered by Nationwide.  The same thing happened to her, and her check was 1/10th of what State Farm settled on my house.  Similar problem.  Different response.

State Farm is on my side!

There is quite a variation. The company I have, for most things, is a WA state company: Mutual of Enumclaw. They have been great. That includes when my daughters car was stolen and when a roof was blown off. Good company but not sure if they operated nationally. Good rates too. At one point my daughter figured she could save by going with some heavily marketed company. Came back about $1.00 less per year and who knows about coverage -- not even a local office or broker.
