Good Bye Zydrunas... I Will Really Miss You...

I have been a Cavs fan for a very long time. Since the beginning, actually.

Wednesday was, at least for me, a very, very sad day. Zydrunas was sent to the Wizards. Big Z has been a Cav for... I think it's been twelve years now.

I have read stories on Cleveland.com about how Z met his wife. The story of how they met, and how their friendship grew... brought tears of joy to my eyes. Yeah... I'm a big "softie."

I have always really liked the guy. I even wonder... since Ilgauskas is Lithuanian, and my father was full Lithuanian... we might even be related. (If so... I wonder why I'm not taller... LOL)

Last night... Thursday, the Cavs played the Nuggets. They lost... in overtime... 118-116. It was their first loss in FOURTEEN games. It was also their first game without Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

I honestly, truly believe that the Cavs would NOT have lost to Denver if Z was in the game. The Cavs got creamed in the first quarter. Z usually plays the last half of the first quarter... and that has been when the Cavs usually step on the gas... and "power past" their opponent.

Sure... I am upset that the Cavs lost last night... but personally... I think Zydrunas is/was the "heart" of the Cavs... and I will sincerely miss him. Good Luck Z... may the Force be with you.

Tim: Being in Fort Worth... I have heard the rumors, or rumblings, that Ilgauskas may end up in Dallas. For his sake... I would rather see him in Cleveland. One, it is his home, and two, he has a chance of winning a championship there. I do not think a championship is possible here in Dallas.

Also... just as far as a "human" element is concerned... Cleveland has a decent-sized Lithuanian "presence"... and I would think he would feel doubly at home there. But... if he would end up in Dallas... I think the team would... if this makes any sense... I think the team would "take good care" of him. There are good people on this team.

Oh I totally agree with you. Cleveland is his home and community, and fingers crossed. But like you said, if he were to end up in Dallas, well there are worse destinations in the NBA.

You are an excellent basketball commentator! Do you watch future NBA players, as well? We have a couple (or three or four or five) on our team this year. I am going to have plenty of NBA teams to follow once Wall, Cousins et al. hit the league next year.

Karen Anne - I totally agree with you. It was a big shock for me to know that Big Z became a "trading chip". He so belongs to Cleveland!

BTW, I have many Lithuanian friends here in Cleveland . Wonderful and very intelligent community!

Tim: When the Cavs were in New York playing the New Jersey Nets, two Cavs, Anderson Varajao and Anthony Parker, and the strength and conditioning coach Stan Kellers visited Zydrunas at his New York home in SoHo. Z said he has been overwhelmed by all of the warmth and well wishes the Cavs players, and his fans in Cleveland have poured out to him. It sounds like he indeed IS going to be returning home. Great news, IMHO. :)

Svetlana: Zydrunas really DOES belong in Cleveland, and it appears he feels that way as well.

As far as Lithuanian friends, my Dad had some, but my Grandmother was born in Lithuania, and moved to Cleveland somewhere around 1915. Her husband abandoned her some time after they came to America, and she, then as a single mom, raised my Dad and my Uncle by herself.

She used to go to Mass at St Vitas... and was very Catholic. She told stories of how she played field hockey on the "frozen tundras" of Lithuania... against the boys... and knocked them "on their toukas." She was quite a woman.
