As I sit at my local coffee shop in front of the fire I can't help and wonder if the local coffee shop has become the new "Cheers". You remember the old TV sitcom with Ted Danson, George Wendt and Woody Harrelson and Kelsey Grammer.
If you go often enough you become a "regular" and the barista knows your favorite drink. The other "regulars" may not know your name but they acknowledge you with a tip of there or a welcoming smile.
People come and go through out the day but there always seems like there is a core of people that come to meet with others, get away from the office or house, meet a stranger for their first "contact" off a online dating service and a myriad of other groupings.
From business people meeting clients to single and divorced fathers bringing their kids for hot chocolate we seem to be gravitating to the local coffee house as a local gathering spot.
It's a safe environment to meet others and the sense of being a part of the community is always there.
As I wait for the traffic to die down from rush hour and I look at my local coffee patrons I smile and hear the theme song from Cheers playing in my head:
Sometimes you want to go where everyone knows your name
and they're glad always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same.
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.
You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same.
You wanna go where everybody knows your name.

I think this says it all in a very simple way...in this day of instant connection online we still crave the person to person interaction.
So grab a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate and join the rest of the "Cheers" gang at your local coffee shop.
