A Very Special Feng Shui Home in Long Island New York? Home is Where the HEART I

My wonderful Aunt told me something years ago that I've never forgotten: "Be Careful of the Memories you make today, they will be what you live off of when you get older. Make them Happy Ones."

Maybe it struck such a cord with me because she was so right. When I visit my mother who is 87 years old and in failing health I notice that her favorite things to talk about are the "old days." She has the BEST memories and it's why I've written so much about my childhood.

She stirs the wonderful memories in me and I take care to try and make MORE wonderful memories. She's asked me quite often that if something was to happen to her, if I would want to live in her house. I told her, quite honestly that because so many members of my family had passed the memories might be too difficult.

She said something to me the other day that stopped me in my tracks. She said "Your Memories are in your Heart, not just your Home. You will take them with you wherever you go."

Since I relate so much to Feng Shui and the Emotions of a Home I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of it in this particular way before. What better place then my childhood home then to always have the wonderful Memories not only in, but AROUND me.

These days when I go over to visit I will put Frank Sinatra on for her....and bring her bits of HER favorite memories if I can find them. I found these on Ebay. Actually, hers I had put into a frame and while it took a second for her to realize what they were, it spurned in her so much joy of the ‘good old days.' Quite a bargain at under $10.00

Hi Carole...your Mum is correct your memories are with you where ever you go, and as we get older, we seldom forget our past..only the things we did yesterday. Spent time with your Mum, I did when my Mum was in her twilight years and I'm glad I did.

I tell my kids this all the time, memories are in your heart. They are adverse to selling our home where we moved when the youngest was 1 and the oldest 10. Yes, we have a ton of memories here, but reality is the memories are in our hearts.

When did they phase out those books altogether? When i arrived to this country in the 70's they still had them. When did they disappear?

Carole, What a great story. Memories around me do make me happy. But from a Feng Shui perspectiveI'm a little surprised. I would think these "things" would keep you from moving forward - or is there any relationship? Do "things" keep us in the past or propel us forward in our lives?

Fred, I do spend time with her....lots of time. Then again, I always have :)

Liz, I know she has always loved her house....from the minute she saw it. But she is right about where your memories really are and it's taken me time to see that.

Lizette, She is the best of mothers...fun, funny and always kind. It's sad seeing her so frail but she's home with Pierre in her house that she love.

Missy, They were always so closedly connected to the home as well....but she's very right, they will go with me wherever I take them.

Maggie, I don't remember, honestly, when they phased them out but I do remember growing up with them and how we'd sit for hours and paste those stamps in. There were around a long time and I'm happy it brought back a nice memory for her (and me!).

Dena, No, I never believe happy memories hold you back....I believe they inspire and remind you to move forward and just remember all the love and happiness. I never ask my clients to let go of things they love, to me that's not a Feng Shui principles because they are surrounded with happy memories.

Grace, It sounds like your mom made some wonderful memories and has passed them down to very, very special people in her life. To me they are what the future is built on.

Jo, It was so much fun to find them....I can't believe that people save everything! Hers are much nicer, we put them in a frame and although it took her a minute, it brought back so much joy.

Jim, I did not do that with my Grandmother and I'm so sorry I didn't. Their lives were treasures and I remember very well all the stories she told me but they are not documented. What a shame.
