"HELLO, GOODBYE" to the Beetles?

A big topic of discussion for Colorado Mountain property owners and prospective buyers are the Beetles! 

Not The Beatles, John, Paul, George and Ringo, but the Mountain Pine Beetle.

I read a terrific article today from The Denver Post about a new idea to help manage the mountain pine beetle problem.

This has got to be the most interesting article I have ever read about ridding us of this tiny little insect that has managed to devour 3.6 million acres of forest land in Colorado and Wyoming alone.

Researchers and a composer recorded the sounds the beetles make.

By manipulating the recorded beetle's chirps, screeches and scratching and playing them back to the beetles, they discovered that they can interrupt the bug's mating patterns and even provoke them to attack and eat each other!

The article is fascinating and definitely worth the read.

Manipulating the beetle noises, reminded me of how the other Beatles (John, Paul, George and Ringo) manipulated their voices by backmasking (recording backward vocals) on their Revolver Album.

A few years later, the backward vocals on the song Revolution 9, on the "White Album" apparently confirmed the rumor that Paul McCartney was dead.

 

I remember the uproar this backmasking created; fear that satanic messages recorded backwards could somehow seep into our subconscious and "manipulate our behavior without our knowledge or consent."

 

I'm not certain of the ramifications of backmasking in popular music,

but I do rather like the idea of manipulating the sounds of the mountain pine beetle so that they turn on one another!

I envision thousands of campers, fishermen, picnickers and outdoor enthusiasts going into the woods with this CD, if it ruins the beetle's picnic, that's fine with me!
