CamelThe baby camel asks the Mommy camel why three toed hooves? Better to not sink in the soft hot desert sand. The baby camel asks Mom, why the long eye lashes? To keep the blowing sand out of your eyes. The baby camel asks what is the need for the hump on the back? Storage of water and fat across the long dry sand dunes. Then WHY, asks the baby camel are we here in the Winter in the Toronto zoo?

Is Your Camel Parked In The Wrong Desert?

Oftentimes our skill set in Real Estate may be misapplied where we are a better Buyers Agent, Listing Agent, behind the scenes Virtual Assistant, Ring Leader of a Team vs. Individual contributor. Ask others what they think your natural tendencies are. Some people love farm and ranch or condos, others are strictly short sales or luxury properties. But the real question is, are you good at it?

Don't find yourself in the Toronto zoo on a chilly February when you were born to roam the Sahara!!

Gary...very good question.  I sometimes wonder if I am parked at the right ZOO!

It's always good to know your strenghts, but it doesn't hurt to exercise your weaknesses either.

I listen carefully to my clients in what they want in a home, area and price point. Sometimes we deviate but come right back to important criteria. I like to think I am good at what I do with buyers and sellers...and I wear many hats!

Asking others to tell you what they see as your strengths is an empowering exercise. Its not uncommon for others to see greater then we do in ourselves.

Great analogy, Gary. I love residential and was recently thrown into commercial when my daughter's school was foreclosed on, but I've written agreements for referral fees so I don't have to relearn that side of real estate.

Gary...You make some really good points. I think it is important to specialize in some segment of the market and then communicate that effectively to potential clients.

I think it is about time I step back a question my longitude and latitude.

Gary,

Good analogy.....reminds me of the swan finding itself amongst a family of ducks who think he is ugly....then one day>

Gary...it's good to have the baby camels around you to even ask the questions...why, where and how seem to be the questions about identity and purpose...Cherise

Gary, this is a pertinent line of thought to pursue for the Real Estate entrepreneur. There is enough to overcome without finding your niche in the business. Checking with others helps us see ourselves better.

Hmm, Gary, great analogy!  I'm not parked any longer--I'm moving full speed ahead!

Gotta run...my niche is calling! LOL

Have a fantastic week!

You pulled that together very nicely!!  I decided to concentrate my efforts in purely customer service, no matter which hat I'm wearing.. buyer's agent or seller's agent.  So far, so good!

I agree with Susan,  what a surprise....  I am a buyer's agent, but I sell for banks, list short sales for banks.  And, am an all around Jack of all trades with marketing for our brokerage.    I enjoy being able to pull sellers from the brink of a foreclosure.  I don't enjoy evicting people (i.e., doing cash-for-keys), but it is part of the job.  I do what I do best, and I work at the rest.  I agree that we have to do what is best for the client at any particular point.  And, with luck, we can do it well or bring in talent that can make it work even better!    I know how to cooperate and get my clients the best.

Gary - There is no better way to be a well rounded agent than to try to learn and experience different niches.  Cross training is what helps bring it all together.

Gary, I just love your analogy. I can hear that baby camel asking Mom the never ending questions :)  I hate to admit it, but I LOVE working with buyers for some reason.  I think I feel like I am in control a bit more?  I do work with sellers as well and have thought many times that I could have a whole lot more time off if I would focus more on just sellers.  I loved Susan's comment.  That was great!

Hi Gary,

Your analogy is wonderful..very valid points..discovering what hat fits best is half the battle and then its smooth sailing!

Thank you for this! I've actually been down on myself for not being good at everything, when I know I work best with sellers. Maybe I should just accept that I'm really good at what I do, and stick with that! =)

I'd like to think that we carved out our niches nicely here in the Manhattan Condo market, but thanks for the wise reminder... it is always good to think about what we are good at and make sure we maximize it.

Gary, good questions.  I often wonder why I'm in this zoo in the first place.

I don't know how you keep coming up with such meaningful and relevant posts time after time but you do, Gary.  You're an amazing blogger, not for the frequency of your posts but for their poignancy each and every time. -- Tanya in Montreal

Lot of truth in that camel talk! Interesting and appropriate question we all need to answer!
