The Nature of 'Trust'.

By
Industry Observer

A few days ago I was unpacking more of my books and found The 8th Habit by Stephen R Covey.
Becoming a bit distracted from the task at hand, I sat down for a bit and began to flip through the pages.

I came across a part in it that talked about a concept his son, Stephen MR Covey, had come up with called The Speed of Trust. I became intrigued with this concept once I read the principles behind it and behind trust itself.

If we trust ourselves, we tend to trust others.
When we trust someone, inherently and deeply trust them, it matters not what they say, we don't immediately question it as being wrong, because we trust them. Trust is that fast.
It works in the blink of an eye, or less. When it is broken, I was surprised to read, it can be gained back again.
I've often wondered about that. How many times can someone break our trust before we never wholly trust them again?

I've written before about 'the rule of threes'. It is a universal law and has these variations:

~Spirit warns you twice, the third time you stand alone.

~Once is chance, twice is coincidence, three times is a pattern.

In business, the greatest compliment we can receive is the trust and confidence our clients place in us. Without it we have nothing.

How do we gain trust from those around us?

  • By being consistent in our words and actions.
  • By living with integrity, not only when someone is watching, but more importantly when no one is watching.
  • By telling the truth, even when it may not be what someone wants to hear.
  • By being ourselves, transparent and open.
  • By genuinely caring for our client's needs and wants. We put their best interests first in all of our actions, when acting on their behalf.

Trust can take a long time to gain, and yet can be lost in a fraction of a second. Something to always consider as we go about our day to day business activities.

Trust can make or break your business.

hi Cal,

Very true...trust is one of the greatest gifts someone can give us, however it has to be well deserved and earned.

Jo - trust in business - trust in life - trust in Government - all have to be earned. We need to be able to trust those we do business with. We need to be able to trust those around us in life. Last but not least we need to be able to trust the governments we elect to act in our best interests.
