Hiring a Realtor To Sell Your Home! Make Sure They Don't Have Another Job!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with REMAX Community

I am fed up with seeing Realtors market themselves as FULL TIME agents and they work other jobs part time.  Are you really representing your clients when you can't be available to schedule a showing for another agent or you can only pick up contracts after 5:00 pm when you are finished working your day job!!!!

Real Estate is a career and is a Service to clients to represent their largest investment ever!  A HOME!  I understand times are tough!  Everyone struggles at times, but if you need a job to bring in a few hundred extra dollars a week to survive, how can you possibly market for a seller?  How can you prospect?  Oh, I'm sure some of you will go crazy on this post telling me you can prospect on the weekend and in the evening, but be honest to yourself and your clients.  Have you had to turn down a buyer or seller because of another job conflict?

Get out of Real Estate if you can't make it a 100% commitment!  Save an expert job for the experts!  Sellers and buyers should ask their agent if they have another job to supplement their income before hiring them!

Janet,

No one should advertise something that is not true.

I feel that there are a lot of people who have a license that would be better off referring to full time agents.  These agents would make money while they worked their other jobs knowing that their referrals are being best served.  It's a tough market but do you harm clients you can't serve for that occasional closing?

I agree 100%!  Thank you.  There should be something mandatory in our industry that our Brokers would be forced to monitor and that is that we are full time!  You are so right, these agents referring to the experts would make our industry so much better.  How many times do we take listings from clients that have been on the market prior to us and were overpriced and undermarketed!  Not always is it from an agent with another job, but lately, I'm finding that to be more of the norm.

If an agent needs a second job -- perhaps they might consider keeping their license active, but referring all the real estate business they encounter and taking a referral fee --- there are a lot of agents who are not making it in this market and need other work -- but agree with you it would be best if they did not try and take on the role of a full time agent and then not be available. All the best.

Janet,

I absolutely agree with you!  I did start in real estate part-time (6 years ago) while I was selling my business and wrapping things up there. I worked closely with my broker and she was available whenever I needed her and my clients did not suffer however, I would never do that again.  I think real estate is way to important to make your clients take a back seat.

The good news is...NJ will finally require continuing education for Realtors and that should help clean house.  Just think of all of the licensed agents who have their grandmothers house listed for sale while they are working at the local grocery store.  These people will be dropping their licenses when the cost to do business gets too high.  I can't wait to see how many people drop out next year!

Have a Prosperous 2010!
