I went down to the USS Midway Museum today to see something that is back in America.

It was here in San Diego from 1987 to 1995.

It's back in the United States after detours to New Zealand and Switzerland.

Back in America, where it belongs.

What is it?

I would have to guess that it is the trophy for the "America's Cup".

Hey, MaryBeth - Yes it does!

Hey, Lou and Corey - Not even a guess?

Hey, Rebecca and Dagny - Answer coming at the end of this comment if no one gets it.

Hey, Jim - We have a winner!

Yes, it's the America's Cup trophy. There was an official presentation on the USS Midway yesterday. They had two people guarding the trophy who looked like something out of a Steven Seagal or JeanClaude Van Damme movie.

The America's Cup trophy is the oldest active trophy in sports. The New York Yacht Club had the trophy from 1857 to 1983, the longest streak in the history of sports. The San Diego Yacht Club had the trophy from 1987 to 1995.

Some of the past winners of the America's Cup include John Malcom Forbes, William K. Vanderbilt, J. Pierpont Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt III, Harold S. Vanderbilt, and Ted Turner.

Unfortunately, recent races have had as much to do with the courtrooms as the water, but when there are boats involved that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, not to mention the egos of the multi-billion dollar owners, sometimes the courts are the only place where such people can resolve their differences. Of course, they also are the only ones who have enough money to tie up the courts with sports lawsuits. I read one report that said this most recent America's Cup was between the fourth richest person in the world (Larry Ellison of America) and the 52nd richest person in the world (Ernesto Bertarelli of Switzerland).

Ah, we were too late on this one Russel, we knew it was not the Stanley Cup but we were thinking that cup for sailing, the America Cup....that was always a good race to watch, but haven't seen it in here.  Congratulations on getting it back!

I missed this one and actually knew what it was! My mom and dad have a sailboat at Dana Point Harbor up the coast from here. My father would have been VERY disappointed if I couldn't recognize this!
