The Little Chihuahua Surrogate Mother

This is Lilly... She is a 10 year old chihuahua that has raised 3 kittens from one litter and 2 more from other litters.  I came home one day and a friend had called to ask me for some help with a cat that had abandoned her kittens.  I hurried over to her house to find her holding a towel with 3 kittens in it that were still attached to the placenta by there cords.  I quickly went into action and sent my friend off to the feed store to get supplies that I would need to care for the babies.  When I had cut and tied off the kittens, we got busy warming them and getting them some nourishment.

We decided that it would be best for me to take the kittens home with me as they would require care just like a newborn every 2 hours or more.  When I got home, Lilly heard and smelled the kittens and went berserk!!  She wouldn't leave me alone trying to get to the little ones.  I put them down by her carefully and she began to groom them.  The next 24 hours she would bark at me to let me know that they were hungry!  I fed them by the bottle for the first 24 hours.  The next morning when I got up for the early morning feeding, I couldn't believe my eyes!!  The kittens were nursing on the dog!!

Much to my surprise, Lilly had began to lactate!!  She was now producing enough milk to feed all 3 kittens!!  From that minute on, my hands were free!  She took complete care of them!  I was shocked!  I spoke with my veterinarian and let him know that Lilly could be a surrogate mother if he ever needed help with abandoned puppies or kittens.

Lilly has raised all 5 cats and they are all now 3 times her size.  We have 2 of the five here with us and Lilly is as content as can be!  Now when I am sitting in the house I can make a high pitched meow that sounds just like a new born kitten.  Lilly will come running with her ears up and tail wagging!  She's a great mom!!

Lilly looks quite content and well loved. And judging from her treatment of the kittens she obviously has a very big heart in that little body.

Lily is a true "humanitarian" (or whatever the canine/feline equivalent is) ... thanks so much for sharing this story!

What a great story!  Lilly is a special girl.  Did she ever have any of her own pups?

Hi Maureen,

Thank you!  We agree with you, she is very special!  No, she has never had a litter of her own puppies.  We wanted to breed her to carry on the blood line as I had her Mother for 17 years and also have her brother and dad.  Instead, she has taken in the abandoned little kittens in our area and seems quite content with her "babies".  We are so glad that she was able to help them all out.  Lilly was the runt of the litter that she came from and I had to tube feed her for the first 3 days of her life.  The veterinarian didn't think that she would live.  She was so weak that she couldn't even lift her own head.  3 days later she was lifting her head and I had to teach her how to nurse on her mom.  Once she got that figured out, she took off with her growth and didn't have any more trouble.  She is quite the little blessing!  Hope you have a great week!  :)

What a terrific story!  I have a grand dog named Lilly and she is a doll too--so loveable.  I heard someone on TV or the radio talking about a Chihuahua being a surrogate mother.  Now I am wondering if it was your Lilly.

Hi Marlene,

Thank you.  She is an increadible little dog.  We consider ourselves very lucky to have her.  She has been a great Mom and the best little cuddle bug ever!  I know that a lot of people in the area know that Lilly is a surrogate Mom.  I am so happy that she has been such a great mom!  I hope you have a great day!  :)

OMG that is so amazing - and so quickly she just took over feeding them!  Do the cats behave differently having a dog for a mother?

Hello Peter & Dawn: I would like to say that is quite the chihuahua you have there. My wife kim and myself 3 altogether we love them all. Tiny is the smallest out of the 3 she is a bit bigger then a tea cup size and that is full grown.IT was nice to see you little lilly down such a great job at rasing those kittens it is nice to see many people care about animals. This might sound stange or funny maybe even weird. But i have been checking out the computer to see if it is possible to see if there is a chance for surrogate dogs just so we could get a litter from our little girl tiny. Anyway i am proud to read about your dog tilly she rally outdid herself this time don't you think i was glad to come across your story once again THANK YOU KIM & LARRY

Hi Georgina,

It has been a while since I have been on Active Rain.  I had to finish medical school.  I am done now so it is time to get back to my blog.  To answer your question, no they don't behave any different at all when kittens are raised by a dog.  Strange really to watch but truly amazing none the less.

Hello Kim and Larry,

Glad that you enjoyed hearing Lilly's story.  She is a great little dog.  We just lost one of the cats that she raised and Lilly has been greiving her baby girl.  She had cancer of the stomach so we finally had to put her down.  It is strange to see how they greive just like humans do.  She is here cuddled up with me now and I hope that she will have the opportunity to raise many other litters of puppies or kittens.
