Are teens keeping parents clueless? by Sandy ShoresOur teens are establishing a new language.  'm dnt 4get 2 pic me u @ 5' (Mom, Don't forget to pick me up at 5:00).  It's called texting. I think it's changing the English language, as we know it.

While we were having lunch, my friend received the text from her 14 year old daughter.  "It's like a new language, isn't it?" she commented.  "It sure is, a language that I am still trying to get used to. I don't know what they're saying sometimes."

The other night I went in to my daughter's room.  She was texting her friend, Cindy.  "What are you doing?" I asked. "Trying to find out if Cindy is coming to my track meet.  I was hanging over her shoulder trying to read the message she had just typed on her Ipod Touch, "h hru sup r u comin 2 c me tomo @ tm tmb"  (Hey, how are you?  What's up?  Are you coming to see me tomorrow at the track meet?  Text me back.) Cindy responded with, "idky mgt c u @ 10 ttyl ily bff" (I don't know, I might see you at 10:00.  Talk to you later. I love you. Best friends forever.)

Is this something kids have adapted to communicate with their friends? A language that only they can understand?   aitr (adult in the room)

It looks like shorthand from days gone by. I remember when I was in high school, we all took shorthand.

"What does that say?" I asked.  "Oh, come on mom, you don't know?"  "No, I really don't." "Wow, really?"

Wow, really I didn't know. but gwhtlc (glad we had this little chat)

A couple of weeks ago an out of state friend, that I haven't spoken to in months, sent me an e mail, requesting info for a friend of hers moving to the area. I responded with the info, and wrote a lengthy e mail.  She wrote back, 'it was so refreshing getting your e mail. You actually write in English.  I have friends that abbreviate everything. They don't use capital letters, or any punctation marks and it drives me crazy."

Out of curiousity I went online and googled 'texting abbreviations'.  One website gave me 1180 texting abbreviations.  ygtbkm (you've got to be kidding me) I was shocked!  My daughters looked over the list.  "Oh, we don't use these.  I've never heard of most of these,"  My 14 year old chimed in, "we don't use 1/32nd of the abbreviations on that list!"

Really, 1/32nd of them?  Hmmm, I have to think on that one.

Well, I don't know about you, but I feel like I'm back in college, taking Spanish, learning a whole new language, again.  mego (My eyes glaze over.) Something I've just got to get used to.

I wonder how long it will take. tttt (These things take time.)

Let me know if it's easier for you, than it is for me.

Aight ttfn hag1 (Alright, ta ta for now. Have a good one.)

It drives me carzy trying to figure out what my 12 year old and his friends are texting when I review his messages (one condition of having his own cell phone). ROTFL was one that bugged me forever - rolling on the floor laughing.

If they have unlimited texting, why not just spell out more things and send multiple messages?

Kevin, I do think that some of these kids are addicted to texting. Some are glued to those keyboards.

Gloria, I know, they can text while they are walking - amazing. They are so connected today, yet at the same time so disconnected.

Emcee, I agree. It is an ever changing language.  I've also seen it creeping into other modes of communication.  It reminds me of being in high school, learning short hand all over again.

Richard, Well, that's what I don't understand. Just pick up the phone and talk. But, with texting who needs to talk?  Ugh -I really dislike it.

Patricia, I didn't know there was a list either, until for fun I just googled Texting abbreviations.  Unbelievable, isn't it?

Roger, Crazy stuff. It makes my head hurt too.

Mark, My daughter loves to text me.  She spells everything out for me. I always tell her, just call me.

Lori and Bruce, I think that it may really become a problem when they hit their twenties, because they may not know how to communicate the way that we do.  It's kind of scary.

Paul, Hey, that's a great idea. I could make some serious money there, couldn't I?  But, I'll tell you what, it never ceases to amaze me how fast they are on the keyboard.

Irene. You feel old?  You and me both?  Spell check is out the window today.  It's all too much for me sometimes.

Mary, I love it- that's a great one - they have spell things out for old Mary, Grandma with the hairnet, the cane and the McDonalds cup of coffee.  I'll have to try that with my girls.  Actually, they are really good with me about not using a bunch of abbreviations!

Gabe, I didn't know what any of them were when I wrote this. I had to use a reference sheet, myself.  I went back into the post, and added what they really meant.  The title of the post was, Are teens keeping parents clueless?  What do you think?           I'd have to say that I think they are!

Richard, I agree completely. I always tell my girls to pick up the phone and just call their friends, instead of all this instant messaging and texting.

Tori, It's crazy being the parent of a teen today, isn't it?  I'm with you.  Actually my girls are pretty good about spelling many words out.  I've seen some of the messages come in from their friends, and oh my goodness, I don't have a clue, so they have to decipher for me.

Carole, Irene and I feel old too. We'll just start the old ladies club for those of us that have no idea what those teens texts are all about.  Too funny.

Wendy, Well, look at you! You aren't allowed to join the old ladies club because you're typing like the teens, you young wipper snapper, you!  Now, JTLYK I got the last part of your phrase, but I was IMHO for a while on the 10Q until I kept saying it over and over again. 10X UR GR8 2 YGG.

Caren, So you know what it's probably like.  It's always an adventure with my girls, there's no question about it!

Sandy, what about our own colleagues who truncate and abbreviate the homes they are trying to sell? Do they really think that the public understands FRML DR, FF LDRY, and WB FRPLC?

I send text messages, but usually don't abbreviate. I am so relieved I dont' have teens, whew! I would have to remember what all those mean, or carry a cheat sheet. Im2old I guess. I did text my (not so) soon to be son in law the other day. He was shocked I did so. My message? Call R Mother. He did... and right away as I never text him.

Great post, I certainly got a chuckle out of it!

it's a trip, isn't it, Sandy?  I don't have teens yet but my 10yo is already a whiz at the new language.  I do agree that this is a turning point in the English language - we'll just have to adapt!

Sandy - I feel like a dinosaur when I see some of these abbreviations. I agree with Philip #21, the abbreviations are annoying and confusing to the average home buyer. However, I guess we all have to adapt in order to survive as the next generation enters the buying pool.

Sandy,

Very cute and so true!  My two oldest text all the time.  I am trying to get one of them to stop texting when we are both in the HOUSE!  I understand when we are in different locations.

The good news is that I figure this is great training for my next age of clients:-)

All the best, Michelle

Some of my twenty-something clients love communicating by text.  And if they want to do it, it's fine with me!  But I try to write in complete English so there is no question as to what I mean!

It is like learning a new language. I'm all for texting, but this is like morse code! By the time we get it all figured out and memorize "the list" it will all be out of date. Really enjoyed your post!

Thank the good Lord my kids are grown. I must admit that I do text and use  some of these. My concern for the kids that do this will they be able to write a sentence as an adult. I hope so because I can not imagine these things being accepted in business.

Hilarious... But its very scary to me too...

As a dad of three young kids under 10, I'm not yet experienced difficulty in communication. But sooner I will .....My eight year old bugs me now to get him a cell phone so that he can text like others in his class. I said no and he is not getting one any time soon.

I do have to blame the parents for equipping these little ones with hitech gadgets. Our younger ones are so addicted to texting, wii and stuff like that , that they do not want to go out and play, read or talking to their friends and relatives like we used to do.Aware we are helping to build a new generation...

Sorry If I made anyone guilty...

J Philip, It certainly can make it a bit challenging to decipher some of these, there's no question about it.

Andrea, Sometimes, I find that they respond more quickly by texting. I also try not to get into the abbreviation thing, as I don't want to get sloppy in my business.

Leesa, It is a ride, and we may as well hang on, because I'm afraid it's here to stay for awhile.  We'll just have to brush up on our texting skills, won't we?

Judy, I know, sometimes I feel old too. I think we are going to have to do some adapting, whether we want to or not. Funny, when my teens text me, though, they use very few abbreviations...makes my life much easier. They say they really don't use tons of shortcuts.

Michelle, Oh I would hate if my girls were texting me while in the house with me.  I have to tell them sometimes that it's too much texting anyway, especially my oldest.

Lise, It's so important that we try to stay abreast of what are teens are doing, who they're talking to and what they're talking about.  There's no question about that.

Richard, I agree. I respond back in complete sentences so their is no misinformation also.

Lee and Carol, Yes, I agree. I think that is an ever changing list.  My daughters said they hadn't even seen a lot of the abbreviations on the list.

Tom, I agree with that also.  Are we going to wind up with a generation of people that are unable to properly communicate with others.  Could be.  It's a very scary thought.

Lisa, I think that we our kids may easily forget to spell, because of this.
