Big South Fork National Park is a destination for trail riders from all over the east coast, and with good reason. The trails are wonderful and there are a number of horse campgrounds in proximity to the park that offer accommodations for visitors.

Many riders plan their vacation well in advance because the campgrounds are booked on the best weekends, of course. Each campground has its own character and the best way to decide if you want to commit is to go to Horse Trail Directory (http://www.horsetraildirectory.com)and click on a particular state...in this case, Tennessee...and read the reviews of what other campers have found appealing or objectionable.

Reviews of horse campgrounds can vary widely

In the hospitality industry, there's bound to be the odd malcontent who will always find something to complain about but, scroll through the reviews over a period of time and, if there are more than one or two bad reviews, that's a big RED FLAG!

Some campgrounds are harder to find, located down a side road, and some campers really like being tucked away. Some have better trail access. Some campsites have more shade. Many big rigs need a pull-thru site. Some have a bigger stalls or the barn is closer to the camping area. Some have a cleaner bath house. Some offer entertainment. Some have a tag-along trailer available for the campers' use or campground hosts will deliver campers to various trailheads and pick them up after a day of riding.

Many campers return to the same campground year after year and some choose the same campsite each time, booking early to ensure its availability. The riding's great, no question, but there's more to it than that. It's your vacation, your money and your time, so it's up to you to "do your homework." Anyone can put an ad in The Trail Rider magazine but it's the campers themselves who will tell the tale.

This directory sounds invaluable.  I don't like surprises when I travel and I when I choose a hotel it always based on reviews written by others who have stayed there.  Makes sense riders would do the same when choosing a campground.

Leslie...What a great directory to help with making campground selections.  The ones you describe sound wonderful and full of amenities.'

I would disagree with your statement that if there are more than one or two bad reviews over a period of time that it's a big red flag. One still needs to analyze the rest of the data. For example, if a restaurant serves 100 people a day, I would consider one or two bad reviews a day to be perfectly acceptable. You have to remember that the most vocal people are those who are unhappy, just like in politics.

Hi, Sharon. I hate to order something online and have to send it back so I like to read product reviews, particularly when it comes to sizing and whether clothes run large or run small. With people commenting on all manner of products, services and customer service, there's no need for unpleasant surprises!

Hi, Russel. I guess the operative word is "more." If you are trying to choose a horse campground here at Big South Fork for your vacation and you read reviews of several but one stands out as having an extraordinary number of negative reviews, I would consider more than one or two a red flag, especially if there are more than three or four or more than five or six!

Being vocal is the whole point of the review. If campers are unhappy and they take the time to warn others, I would sure want to know what they are unhappy about and I'd want to see if having unhappy campers is a trend!

I live minutes from the Cumberland Trailhead into Big South Fork National Park, in Spruce Creek Acres, an equestrian community that abuts the park itself. Horses are a major part of daily life here and this is a very active, supportive horse-oriented community. It is a gift to work as a realtor here, listing horse properties and selling horse properties to horse people! We joke that I've probably done more real estate on horseback than off! If you want to "live where you love to ride," let me help you find YOUR Big South Fork horse property .
