I just love finding these articles and sharing them with design professionals. I hope they are as interesting to you, as they are to me. I hope I don't inundate and bore you!
Are Color and Emotion Linked?
This article highlights not a new concept, but one that I have heard of before; how color affects moods and those initial reactions. I thought it was interesting to consider how coloring can spark an emotion or memory in one person, yet completely void in another.
I know color is VERY important when home staging and I really appreciated the humor, insight and, ultimately, huge success of Jessica Hughes' dilemma noted in her blog, Neon Green and Ochre: Oh My! The above article has some interesting insight, "Numerous psychological and physiological studies reveal correlations between color and our emotions." Also, as quoted in the article, Martin Heesacker, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Psychology at the University of Florida says,
“The likely place for understanding the importance of color is the social, cultural and the personal history of the individual. If I have a happy childhood, and every night I go to bed in a bright yellow room, I’m going to associate this color with good feelings when I’m an adult”
Going for that "universal appeal" is the best practice. Find something that the most amount of people like the most amount of time, and you will probably get the most amount of results. However, there are always those colors that people just can't associate with.
Regards,
Nate
