Any union official worth his/her salt needs to review Ronald Reagan's handling of the PATCO strike in the early 1980s.

In 2010, the lesson with be the Central Falls, RI School Committee which voted 5-2 to FIRE every educator in the school * teachers * counselors * principal * at the end of this school year.

The firing plan came with the blessing of the State Education Commissioner and after numerous attempts by the Superintendent Frances Gallo to negotiate better performance with the teachers union.

Central Falls Teachers Union President Jane Sessums says she is reviewing several legal options.

HHHMMM.... having been a teacher for 17 years, I'm all for teacher's rights!  I remember how we had to BEG for everything!

I have been following this story.  The school superintendent was not suggesting anything outragious, just different from the standard pattern the Union was used to, and they refused.  The Board and Superintendent wanted the teachers to eat lunch with the students once a week, and offer tutoring after school for 25 minutes a day, etc.  I for one am glad to see a school board offload teachers that object to this sort of thing, especially when the GPA of the student body was the worst in the State, as it was in this case.  By allowing that low a score with their students, they had already given up on the kids as it was.  They do not deserve to work there.

Wallace,

At the end of the day, it's critical we teach our youngsters!  I am not a big union fan.  I remember having a teacher growing up when I was in 6th grade (in East Greenwich, RI - in fact) that I KNEW as a child ought to retire.  She missed half the school year and wasn't interested in being there the other half.

All the best, Michelle

I think it is a valid check and balance on the union...

On tv they talked about a loophole in the union contract that allows them to be fired...they should vote to REMOVE the union then go with hand-in-hands to the school district and get re-certified and take some training over the summer.....

Oh no. Kind of like a real job. When an employer asks an employee to do something the employee does it. Probably scary to the teachers.

How many times have we heard this line from the teachers union?

If we dont raise taxes (to pay for raises) we will have to end the  Football, band, track, baseball, basketball programs?

BTW Federal spending on schools went UP 99% under Bush

Yes * and janitors in NY make $100,000 * In our area, older teachers are staying on at higher pay and school board is having to pay them to retire to save $$$ by hiring a younger/cheaper teacher.
