Getting the Other Side of the Issue

Social media is having an evolutionary change in the way information is disseminated. More and more people are getting their news from the social media than traditional media such as TV, newspapers and magazines.

Several prominent authors have gone on record as saying that "there are no more secrets."

I am quite excited that this means that politician's ability to lie to us and to propagate their lies through the mainstream media can now be balanced by communications that spread through the social media.

This is the main reason that I have conficence that the TEA Party movement will ultimately have the effect of getting the corruption out of government.

I am a big fan of Seth Godin, especially Purple Cow and Tribes. If you have not read Tribes, get a copy and see if you do not agree!

As with anything, there is also a downside.  I know a few who believe anything they read and prefer anonymous "news" over recognized sources.

John- A great example is how obama wants to pass bills with only 51 votes but that video of him saying the founders would not approve was released the next day.  obama is a slow learner.

John: I'm not sure that the information perpetuated through social media is consistently factual or reliable. I for one would not stake my reputation on it. Traditional news outlets have a stake in fact checking, which is not the case in social media or blogging.

It is true that information will find its way out if the media does not carry it.

I understand that people are turning to social media sources because the main stream media or news sources have lost the confidence of the American people. Liberals have stolen American freedom of the press and free speech and actually hijacked the system to promote the liberal cause - and America is angry - yet like Obama - they don't get it - don't want to see the truth - therefore people have to and must seek alternative ways to get the truth and speak out in protest -

Great post!

I'll have to look at Tribes. I agree that is difficult in this day and age to keep a secret. If you are a person in the public eye, the secret will come out.

The news outlets work on two things.  Advertising and Access.  They gave away their objectivity when they made access tops.  Social media works in two ways also.  It keeps the pressure on those that would hide or spin information.  And it does a much better job of historical  analysis.  Where would we be without it?

Thank you for the tip on Tribes.  I will look into it.  I agree that social media is fast becoming the change in the tide.

There is a delicate balance with all this.  A lot of stuff on the internet is a bunch of garbage, rumors, made up stories, etc.  However many things that the mainstream media chooses to ignore seems to be found and go viral on the social media and You Tube sites.

Matt:

Your remark "Traditional news outlets have a stake in fact checking, which is not the case in social media or blogging." is the reason that the social media is needed in a big way. It has been MANY YEARS, if ever, that the media has done any real investigative reporting to substantiate their stories. There is also the practice of selective reporting that needs to be remedied here.

The mainstream media propagates the stories that they select and completely ignore the ones that they don't. It is true that there is mis-information in the social media world, but I would rather see a flood of information and let individuals choose what is truth from what is hype.

Your quote, above, tells me that you ONLY listen to the mainstream media and you are not exposed to the other side of the issues.

I like Hotair.com Michelle Malkins site.  It shows video with opinion so you get to see what was said coming out of their own mouths.

We all should remember that the "social media" pulled the covers on Dan Rather and CBS News' attempt to throw the 2004 election with their "October Surprise" letters about George Bush's time in the Air National Guard. A CLASSIC example of the MSM "fact-checking" as opposed to the social media's. However I'm sick of the "Oliver North named Osama Bin Laden in his 1988 testimony during Iran-Contra" rant. I get it about once a year... IT WAS ABU NIDAL DARN IT!!! There... I feel better already... another benefit of the social media!
