Getting Started with Social Media can be overwhelming!

Social Media OverloadIt's easy to get overwhelmed when it comes to establishing a social media presence.

The trick is to getstarted on the right foot and have a strategy before you take on too much! Don't think that you have to go build a dominating presence on every social network right-a-way.  You should start with the major networks:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter
  • My space

Don't think that you need to get them all done at once.  Start by setting up your account in each of these and getting your name reserved. Then pick one and play with it over the next couple of weeks.  Go back and complete your profile.  See if you can figure out how to find and establish a few friends (get connected to friends in your office).  Next sit back and watch and listen to how people interact with each other.  Once you feel somewhat comfortable, start engaging with and building your contacts. Get one under your belt before you move onto the next project.  So what if it takes you several months to get these done?  Before you know it, you will have built a virtual empire!

This is true.  It can be paralyzing when you think of how much you have to do!  There are times when you get stuck in the mud becuase there is so much to do you don' t know where to start.

The best thing to do is use leverage. Get someone, who really knows how it works and let them set it up for you and you maintain it.

I get overwhelmed sometimes but it does seem to work for me --- I just have to find the time to maintain the sites so I agree with Ron -- if you can find someone to do it for you and that is afforable!

If I joined all the social networking sites out there and tried to be just a little above average, I wouldn't have time left over to actually work! LOL

I think it's important to tackle one at a time so as not to get overwhelmed.  I like your steps to getting acquainted with the media - thanks for sharing.

Good advice!  Once you get familiar with what's available, you can decide which platforms best suite your tastes and your busines.  I've got a radio show on this topic coming up tomorrow.
