Remembering the farm life

I received a couple of pictures from my daughter this morning that were taken last Summer on their visit to Fort Worth.  This was her first experience with a horse and she absolutely loved it.  I'm always amazed how little girls take to horses and dogs and vice versa.

Growing up on a farm I always wished we lived in town.  I didn't like all the work that went with living on the farm, driving the tractor, feeding and caring for the cows, the horses, the chickens, and the general care of the place.  All the time I was wishing I could be in town with my friends, cruising main street.  Yes, I'm dateing myself.  I grew up in the 60's and 70's.  Our closest neighbor was 2 miles away.  I rode the school bus 2 1/2 hours each way to school and always had chores to do before and after school, which included milking the cow.  There were 6 other kids in my 8th grade class.

It wasn't until I became an adult and gained some wisdom that I appreciated the farm life I grew up with.  It taught me the value of responsability, the satifaction of a job well done, hard work is good, the appreciation of God's wisdom and his work.  It was a good and simple life.

I remember my Sister and I playing Cowboys and Indians for hours on real horses and building and playing Fort.  We used our imagination to play and even when we were working we made up stuff to entertain ourselves.

I now look at the children today setting in front of the TV and addicted to video games and think how sad it is they don't know what their missing.  Their intitlement mentality.  A different day and time!

I hope I can, at least expose my Grandchildren to some of things I enjoyed as child and while doing that instill in them the core values in which the farm life left on me.

Happy Trails, DK
