Craig, we have seen this in our area too.  Sometimes looking for the "in-law suite" or a granny unit with a separate entrance; or sometimes thinking about themselves aging in a few years!  Don't worry, you won't be there any time soon..... He he!!!

They are hard to find sometimes when I'm looking and then they may have a 1st floor bedroom, but then have only a half bath on the main level!  That doesn't help them much either...next!  LOL

Why thank you Craig!  I couldn't write this sooner because I had to find my glasses to read your response!

Craig:

This is a great way to cater to a niche market. And, I love the photo.

The answer to the glasses problem is to have a pair made for every room in the house. You may be living in a ranch but you are keeping the optometrist in a mansion.  It does become scary when we start to lose things. I could not find my lockbox key all day yesterday. It finally turned up in an odd place just as I was going to call Supra and order a new one...

Wanda - Put one foot in front of the other as you're walking Wanda!

Renee - It seems that in areas where there is a lot of new construction 1st floor masters are more popular than in areas where it's already built up.

Regina - If you knew how I felt this morning, you'd be looking for a granny unit for me right now!!!

Michael - Thank you sir. I call it "fun with marketing from a guy with a misspent youth"!

Kathleen - Well unless you're showering in the sink or toilet, a 1/2 bathroom is useless for a 1st floor bedroom! What was the builder thinking?

Debra - Ha! Ha! Ha! But don't worry, you still have many years before you're required to move to Florida!!!

Claudette - "Living in a ranch but keeping the optometrist in a mansion!" Hysterical! Don't you hate it when you lose things? Or when someone says, "I found it. It was in the last place I looked." Well, duh. Why would you look any further if you found it?

First floor masters are definitely our most popular request, followed by one story homes.  These are harder to find - and we're able to do a lot of customization, particularly with accessible or aging in place options.  Great search idea!

Ha!  Craig, this is a painful reminder for many of us - I don't even mind not being able to find my glasses, but the "physical changes" are really getting me down!  LOL

Have a great day!

Craig, great post with the aging boomers in mind! We get alot of call for first floor masters or even one floor living! We are in an area that is filled with 70's 2 story colonials and those owners are realizing that they can't find their glasses and the stairs are getting longer and longer!!

Caren - Many of those staircases seem like Mt. Everest to us aging boomers! Unless you have a Sherpa to guide you to the top, stick with the 1st floor master bedrooms!

Debi - I'm pretty sure my next home will have a 1st floor master. My knees will thank me!

Backwards we are in our lives Craig, we LOVE the upstairs MASTER as it is separated and quiet from the rest of the house, and the exercise of going up the stairs is good for us as we get older. But I know I am in the minority, as I guess everyone else wants it down. I hear the same trend but I live counter to the way everyone else lives. Just me.

Gary - Where I came from in NY, all of the bedrooms were on the 2nd floor. When I came down here to NC, that's what I wanted, and what I bought. But, my next home will definitely have a 1st floor master. I'm getting old!

I've been noticing a lot more people looking at 1 level ranch homes here, they just don't want stairs at all. Now, where is my lock box key?

Todd - I'm seeing more and more requests for 1st floor bedrooms too. And that's what prompted me to write this blog. Too funny on the missing lock box key! You know it's right where you left it Todd.....If only you could remember where that was!!!
