Anyone who reads my blogs knows that I believe in "Giving Credit Where Credit is Due". Here are some reasons that I applaud Gateway.

  1. They have online chat with Sales; consequently I gave Billy V., a Direct Sales Manager a work out. The same with his team member that 1st assisted me. (I had actually tried to find this person before continuing to work with Billy. I did not know if Gateway worked on commission. The last rep I dealt with spent a good hour with me so I definitely wanted to hook up with him again. My mind was made up to take the plunge and order. Not knowing that Billy was a manager, I verified that the last person I talked to would get credit for the order. Billy, shot me an email to verify his position as well as willingness and authority to give the prior rep credit.
  2. That taken care of I took the opportunity to unload on Billy about Gateway was not giving NAR discounts. When I finished this conversation with Billy -we had a nice overall savings- over the online configure your quote version. Billy is advising his team about taking extra special care with REALTORS and offering to configure the same or similar deals for anyone who mentions this blog as he did with me. I came in less than $2,000. I also ordered a couple of items that someone else may not see the need for such as the bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse. (Here is the original configuration)

3. My order arrived earlier than projected, even though it was customized. It is hard for me to visualize actual sizes when ordering online. The 7125C would have been the right choice for many people; but I felt cramped and found myself wishing I had ordered the larger, heavier 210X. I put Billy and his word to the test. I contacted him and let him know that there was nothing wrong with the 7125C but, I felt the 210X would be a better choice for the way I use my Tablet. Billy was kind and considerate through this whole process. He reminded me that: 1) the 210X is a lot heavier, 2) The 210 did not have fingerprint security or touch screen (wacom).

4. I told him that a larger keyboard and screen would be more suitable for how I use the tablet. I go from home office to client office (or kitchen). Its not as if I carry around the tablet for long amounts of time.

Talk about PROfessional courtesy--Billy allowed me to keep the 7125C while the 210X was in shipment without billing me! So that's how I ended up with the two newest Gateway units side by side.

Would I buy from Gateway again? You bet! This is what I like about the 210X:

Keyboard, feel of the keys, the screen is wonderful, the magnetic pen glides like silk. I appreciate the built in slightly elevated tilt (ergonomics). I like the way it securely closes magetically. There are tons of great features. (Like the button that adjusts the screen automatically for the mode you are using the tablet in).

I am very happy with my set up. I have a lot to learn as I chose to go with Vista Business and Office Small Business 2007 w/One note 2007.

Remember that to make a totally mobile office out of a tablet you should probably add VREO RED. Last time I talked with them, that was a $200 set up fee, then $25 a month. But that also includes a fax# and faxing. Save your Winform or Zipform documents then import to RED. Then clients can sign on your computer. Then you can email or fax copies to them, or use a portable printer if they do not have email/fax capability.

I also use Verizon Wireless which is about $62 a month after set up. There are other choices, and you can hope to pick up connections.

The configuration was different for the 210X than the 7125. If you want to talk to Billy about either configuration I have included his email address with his permission. He may delegate a team member to help you, but they are now more familiar with working with REALTORS and they will be pre-coached by Billy in dealing with REALTORS needs.

I do recommend that you go with a stronger battery or get a back up. Battery is the only weakness I see in the 210X so far. I generally keep mine plugged in AC, even in the car. Then when you visit with a client away from the office or work at Starbuck's, you'll be fine.

PS: The magnetic pen for the 210X is the only one that works with this model. You may want to order an extra. I have a key chain attached to mine with one of those mini-stretchy cords. It makes it easy to find when you lay it down. There is also a "Pen finder" you can configure that I have not configured yet, but I probably should.

I almost didn't buy a Gateway because I read a review somewhere about the pen not seeming to work well. Mine works great. I used the aligning process which is really simple.

Last, I read blogs in which agents have chosen not to use Vista or Microsoft Small Business 2007 because they fear incompatability. You may have to spend a little time with tech support synching your Palm/Supra products. Other than that, I have had 0 compatability issues. The buddy system between Outlook, One Note 2007 is amazing, as well as being able attach emails to accounts with a click.

That's enough for one blog:-)

Suzi, I'm glad you wrote this, because I had read that Gateway's service had deteriorated.  Another useful piece of information is that you did better when you mentioned NAR, even thought there is no official discount.

What a comprehensive post! Thanks for sharing your experience. I love my tablet and think they are the perfect computer for a real estate agent! I had, also, heard negative things about Gateway, so it is nice to hear the other side

Joeann and Brian, thanks for taking the time to comment. I would buy through Billy's team again. For 1 thing I wouldn't have to cover the ground that Billy and I took time covering. They will always be REALTOR ready now, even more so if my Blog is mentioned.

I tell everyone with whom I am making a substantial REal Estate RElated service that eventually I will blog about the product and service, bottom line truth.

Suzi, I am considering a tablet pc myself, so I thank you very much for the comprehensive reviews. I rated the post 5 for its content. Gateway is looking like a good choice.

Jim, thank you kindly for the Fiver. It did take a lot of time to construct this blog, so I appreciate being appreciated.  As stated by Joeanne and Brian, Gateway's reputation took a beating somewhere along the line. In my honest, most humble opinion--I believe they are on the right track. That has been my experience.

Like Joeanne, I not only LOVE my tablet--I am an absolute fanatic. It is frustrating in that I know I only use a small portion of its capabilities. I am still learning, and the new set up with Vist Biz and 2007 office along with One note 2007--well, its astounding.

I could talk tablets all day. However, your satisfaction will come with analyzing your style of work. For instance, Billy was a bit surprised that I did a turn about and opted for the much heavier model but with the new 14" wide screen. I did that because I don't carry it around THAT much. This 14" screen is downright awesome in display, and clients seem to love it (they don't have to almost sit in my lap to see the screen:-). There I go again, off on a tangent.

I recommend emailing Billy and tell them how you wish to use your tablet (your style). They will help you make adjustments according to your need. Of course mention that you are a REALTOR, and that you BLOG. Billy may need to delegate to a REALTOR ready team player. If for any reason you are not happy, go back to Billy.

There are many, many tablets out there. Some with more bells and whistles than what I bought. The end choice is what works for you. REgards

Suzi!

Thanks for doing so much legwork for many of us! When Gateway ran their ads 2 years ago featuring Realtors using tablets, I bought one. It has been very good to have - wide screen, plus the ability to have consumers sign right on the screen. Then, just e-mail a copy of the documents wherever they need to go. A time saver, and a moneysaver.

Thanks!

Patrick, your welcome! Thank you for understanding the purpose. Billy and I worked so hard together, at the end we figured why REinvent the wheel each time? In my opinion, it would be easy to pick up where we left off to further customize to your individual needs. If you email Billy direct and mention this blog, if he can't take care of you himself he will coach a team member. (Hey, we ARE a special group:-)

Rob, I wasn't a fan of Gateway, either. It was only after I priced about every new tablet model possible, with the features I wanted that I even considered looking at Gateway. I still wasn't happy with the price of online configuations with Gateway, either. It was only after making personal contact that things started to change. Plus, the guarantee is that if you don't like it, you can send it back within a certain amount of time. That is more than fair in my opinion since there are few tablets anwhere by any manufacturer on display.

Some people would not like the 210X. I love it! It is heavy. Billy told me that. But, for the screen, keyboard, and pen that it has. I'll deal with that. Plus the fact that unlike many lighter models, it has the DVD player incorporated. Can you imagine getting to have 2 models at the same place, at the same time? I couldn't resist this opportunity.

I strongly advocate letting any business you deal with know that you blog, and you LOVE to give good REports. Near the beginning of our long session, Billy demonstrated to me that he is the Direct Sales Manger (I didn't want the first person I worked with to lose commission). I invited him to google me. He did and thought that was pretty cool.

Just a quick note from a long time tablet user. (three years)  The biggest "make/break" issue is available support after the sale.  Of course, the sales guys are very attentive and helpful.  That's how they make their money.

Now (actually preferably before the sale) test the Customer / Technical support system they offer. Unfortunately far too often you will be talking to some off-shore, script reading, non-english speaking drone that couldn't care less if you are happy with the product.  Their typical solution is to reformat and reinstall everything thereby loosing all your data.  (you do back up don't you?)  It's the fastest way to get you off the phone.  They are NOT computer techs, they are just performing monkeys that use "keyword" lookups to read you scripted responses. If you are stuck in this "tech support hell, ask to be escalated to the next level of support and keep doing it till you get someone that is willing to actually listen and help.

Some companies are waking up to the backlash of this and bringing the tech support back home.  Look for one of those if you can.  From my own experience, the first guy you are talking to make about $8 per hour. (in the States, much less off-shore)  How hard would YOU work for that money?

I love computers in general and particularly tablets and I've found that to make them sing, you have to be your own tech support.   Just life in the fast lane.  The best way to not be at the negative effect of something is to know all you can about it.

Dana--wow. I agree that support after the sale is important. I think that is also in guarantees and warranties. However, if I have an experience that will not or cannot be resolved with Gateway, I will let everyone know.

I generally seem to have really good tech support with whichever company I am dealing with.  Sorry you have had negative experiences. Was that with any particular product, or just a complaint in general?

OK, here's an up to date Gateway experience that could have turned out negatively. As you can tell from this blog I exchanged 1 new model for another 1. Recently I was getting automated calls about my "account". I didn't understand what it was about so I ignored the calls. Finally I received a call from the accounting department telling me that they did not receive the Office 2007 software in return.

Well, I thought I had a problem because I "thought" I remembered packing it. I surely would have noticed if I had 2 sets of the same software. I mentioned that I had returend 2 Gateway boxes that went to different GAteway addresses and there was a possibility that the software went to the wrong address.

The next day I received an email that they had credited my account. So far I have had no problems. Maybe I should test them on something:-) ?
