The new Carbon Monoxide Detector Law known as "Amanda's Law" went into effect February 22, 2010. This law requires carbon monoxide detectors in every 1-2 family property, apartments, condominiums, and co-ops where the unit has appliances, systems or an attached garage that may emit carbon monoxide. These detectors should be placed:
- On each story with a sleeping area
- On each story where a carbon monoxide source is located
- On the lowest story of a unit with a sleeping area
When more than one detector is required they should be connected so that should one alarm activate it will activate all the alarms and the ringing of the alarms will be heard clearly over any other sound and background noise and closed doors especially in the sleeping areas. The exception to this rule is when the detectors are allowed to be battery operated in accordance with section RR313.4.2 such as in single family homes.
All detectors must be listed and labeled as complying with UL 2034 or CAN/CSA 6.19 and MUST be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and this code.
Do not install these detectors near garages, bathrooms or furnace rooms or any location specified as prohibited or not recommended in the manufacturer's installation instructions.
This is such a simple and necessary step that can save your family's life. DO IT TODAY!
