What in the World is wrong with our Society?

Today as I pulled into the parking lot there was a breaking news story that there had been a shooting at a local Elementary School.  I couldn't help but think of what would be going through the mind of a parent that had just dropped off their child, and then heard this on their way to work.  I mentioned the news to one of my friends/co-workers whose husband is a local sheriff deputy.

She came in to my office roughly an hour later to give me the update, and shared her husband's morning.  Shift started at 6 AM.  First call was to the parking lot of a McDonald's where a man had committed suicide, shooting himself in his car.  Before the paperwork was done for that, he had to respond to an emergency less than a mile away where another deputy pulled a car over for a traffic violation, and the driver jumped out with a gun.  The deputy shot, and killed him in the parking lot of a Daycare.  Immediately following this episode (and again before the paperwork was finished) he was called to respond to the elementary school shooting.  A teacher had been shot in her classroom (8 times) by her estranged husband whom she had a restraining order against.

This was all before 10 AM.  At noon he will be attending the dedication of a local baseball field in the name of his best friend.  A fellow officer who was shot & killed along with 3 other officers in a coffee shop the Friday morning after Thanksgiving.

I guess I don't have to look very far to see how much worse my day could be.

My husband is in law enforcement too and I can well relate to those kind of days.  I worry and pray each morning when I get up (he leaves for work at 5 a.m., and I await his phone calls that he is on his way home after 2.  Today, was a good day, he spent it with an inmate who is in the hospital (hand cuffed to the bed).  I'm thankful for those kinds of days.

Wow... It makes me want to stop every police officer I see and thank them. My brother-in-law just retired from service as a police officer in New York... Now he does ski patrols instead of the other more dangerous kind. Thanks to all who serve.

Tammy - I feel for all the spouses fo law enforcement these days.  I cannot imagine the stress that must bring to a relationship.

Ellie - I believe we would be much better off if everyone thought that way.  I cannot imagine how we came to the point where criminals are actively "hunting" law enforcement rather than doing everything possible to avoid them.
