Not everyone can afford a custom built home, but everyone can take note of the best practices of the best custom builders in their area. If you or your clients are considering purchasing raw land, or doing a major remodel of an older home, here are some of the things to keep in mind:
1. Start with a great vision.
2. Find a contractor with whom you communicate easily.
3. Find a contractor with whom you think you can have a cooperative, collaborative relationship.
4. Be flexible.
5. See samples of the builder's work, on paper and in person.
6. Find a company that is trustworthy- open accounting (willing to show you receipts)
7. Choose a quality company with quality subs.
8. Ask for regular progress meetings in advance.
9. Get references. Ask about attention to detail on previous projects.
10. Flexibility: ask about accomodation of some changes to the design.
* Follow-up and make sure that the builder will supply you with all warranties on new appliances, HVAC, etc. and that they will explain the proper maintenance and operation of these new features too.
