Mapping Shmapping--Here is a Mapping Tool We Can All Use

By

A few months ago we organized a tour of SKBK Sotheby’s Beverly Hills listings. It was a big success. One of the things that we did was map out all the listings for our web site and flyers. At the time, the maps were a bit of a pain to do well without buying mapping software.

Today I came across a new mapping tool that I think will solve this problem. We are organizing a tour of In Town Birmingham homes and mapVine will be put to use to map the tour. mapVine has only been out for a few days, so you are getting the first shot at using this nifty tool.

I just set up a test map of a few of our Birmingham listings to see how it works. The user interface is very easy to use. Anyone who has uploaded listings to their own site or to craigslist, should be able to do it. There is a short on-line video tutorial that will lead you through building your first map.

MapVine uses Google Maps, and you have your choice of street map view, satellite or hybrid. You can zoom in as close as you like, or cover a whole state or metro region if need be.

I am going to point you over to an article on my other blog to see how cool mapVine is because I cannot insert html into this post for you to appreciate the full functionality of the finished product.  The map is interactive.  You can click on the balloons to see more info about my listings.  If you click on the links in the balloons you'll be lead back to the pages about those homes on my web site.

I see lots of cool uses of this tool for Realtors and bloggers. Check it out. And if you have feedback for the guy who wrote the code, he's anxious to hear it.

Our MLS has a great mapping tool which simplified showing houses.  We just check the properties we've scheduled and then click 'map' and voila, there's a map of what you want to show.  It's been the best time saver of any of the MLS upgrades we've had in the last few years.

That is great Bonnie.  The mapping on our MLS is a mess.  No labels on the cross streets.  I am jealous!

Yeah, I use listingware, and they have a similiar type of map search.  It is amazing what can be done with Google Maps these days.

Hey M & D,

This is a great tool!  Thanks for passing this along.  It could be really useful to be able to map from one location to another without getting seperate maps and guides.  Coooool

Wow, cool tool.  Thanks for the tips.  I'm more of a Yahoo! Maps fan myself, but that sure is a neat turn-key tool.

This is great, I added a page to our web site with new listings, what is cool is you can link your listing to anything you want. I also had a question and mapvine got back to me right away.

Jerold and Terry,

I visited your pages and that is a great idea of how to use the maps.  I'm thinking of doing a similar page on our site now.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Just a quick update: I have fixed a few little items on the mapVine tool and I also increased the title field box (based on your input) to allow more than twice the text allowed before.

Thanks to everyone who tried it out and gave me suggestions! Please keep the suggestions coming.

Just on a side note, I am amazed on the amount of traffic I have received from this ActiveRain page. I never heard of this site before. Can anyone tell me what the name "ActiveRain" has to do with real estate?

Dave,

Here is my interpretation of ActiveRain:

Think 'rainmaker' as in someone who brings in a lot of business.

Combine it with active--like working hard to bring in business.

You've seen the traffic. It works.  (now accept my invite and join ;-))

Is the geek blogger Jerold or Terry?  In our case, the geeky blogger is Maureen.
