Long Island and Films

Many movies have been filmed entirely or in part in New York over the years.  But less known perhaps is that Long Island has been host to many cinematic spectacles.  With approximately $100 million in revenue added to the economy every year, independent movie makers often choose the island's resources to replicate far off landscapes and the grandeur of times gone by when filming in the estates on the north shore.

You might be surprised to discover that scenes from many famous movies were shot in and around the mansions of the gold coast.  Just a few are:

  • Citizen Kane - The opening scene, and its arial shots filmed at Oheka castle in Cold Spring Harbor
  • The Godfather - Filmed the famous "horse head" scene at Falaise in Sands Point
  • Arthur - If you remember the stable scenes, they were filmed at Caumsett
  • Crocodile Dundee II was filmed at Eagle's Nest - the Vanderbilt estate, as were several scenes of a movie my son directed, yet to be released, called The Empath.  This estate and it's imposing stature and spectactular views will long stay with me as I visited the set many times.
  • Trading Place with Eddie Murphy was filmed at Mill Neck Manor
  • And Westbury Gardens has to be Hollywood's favorite mansion.  Featured in Hitchcock's "North By Northwest," "Love Story," "Cruel Intentions," "Age of Innocence," and others.

My son, as an independent filmmaker who grew up here, always tries to film as much as possible on Long Island and the surrounding areas.
