Legislative Update

On April 6, 2010, voters will have the opportunity to vote on Proposition A.  Proposition A would impose a 0.5% increase in the sales taxes in St. Louis County to fund Metrolink expansion and operations.  The passage of this proposal would match and trigger the sales tax approved by the City of St. Louis in 1997.  A similar transit proposition was narrowly defeated by St. Louis County votes in 2008.

Transit in St. Louis metropolitan area is at a crossroads.  The failure of the 2008 proposition resulted in agency wide layoffs, a transit fare increase and service cuts.  The reduction in service was mitigated by a one-time $12 million appropriation approved by the Missouri General Assembly in 2009.  This appropriate will expire in May, 2010, and Metro will be force to make severe service cuts unless the tax proposition is based.

Proposition A has been endorsed by the St. Louis Association of REALTORS®. The Metropolitan St. Louis Chapter of the Women's Council of REALTORS® will consider a resolution endorsing Proposition A. Although no endorsement has yet been made, the Women's Council of REALTORS® urges its members to stay informed regarding Proposition A and its potential impact.
