Do you make the effort to engage young home-buyers?

Many home-buyers are families with young children and sometimes they come along on the showing appointment ;  so do you engage young home-buyers?

This morning when I  opened my email I was notified that Helpful Hannah had posted a new video.    A video showing how she took  the time to engage even a young homebuyer Child's room with stuffed animals

Do you think how children feel  about a home have any sort of influence on the decision making of buying a particular home?  I thing it does, I have had parents pass on a home because the children were not excited about it.

On the other hand I have had parents ready to make an offer because of the enthusiasm of the children.  So do you make the effort to engage these young home-buyers?  I do, and here is an example of how you could do this:

  • I sometime asked a child what he or she  would like in the new home.  Sometimes the answer is  as simple ask I would like my own room.
  • Then I would say,  I bet you would like to have it painted in your favorite color, and by the way what is your favorite color?
  • During the showing process I would ask; so of the four bedroom which one would you like to make your bedroom?  of course pointing out that mom and dad would probably want the master bedroom.
  • Depending on the personality of the child I might ask; so where do you think the bed should go? and if the child is carrying a stuff animal I would find out the name of the toy and then ask where the toy would sleep.
  • The backyard is also a great place for getting a child engaged, ask a question such as; do you see a spot for a play set?

Keep in mind that personality differs and for some more than one question might be one too many.

So next time you are working with a family make sure to engage each member even the youngest because their votes does count in the buying process.

Jennifer - Being that I relocated a lot as a child and with children of my own I can relate to this post.  Finding a new home is an equally exciting and often anxious time for children as well.

Jennifer - I always make an effort to involve the kids in the process, such as allowing them to unlock the door, or asking the types of questions you mentioned here.  Good stuff!

C- Thank you

Carol you are so right,  especially if the children will be leaving their school and friends behind.

Jason I am sure they appreciate getting the chance to open the door, little ones love playing with doors.

Jennifer - I find that children love when you engage them with questions.  It makes them feel extra special when we make the time and take an interest in their needs too.

Jennifer,
I believe that it's a hard topic this, I believe that it does not direct influence a decision but the way that your children are treated influences your mood and decisions where to go :P   I don't know, just are thoughts :)
