Bring The Amateurs Back To The Olympics - Hockey and Basketball

Let me first say that the gold medal game was extremely entertaining. At the edge of my seat for the final hour. I also enjoyed seeing some of my current and ex- NJ Devils playing in the game which created an additional rooting interest.

HOWEVER, the Olympics are for amateurs. I am not sure how both hockey and basketball eventually evolved into a professional all star game. Maybe it was something to create additional interest for the television networks.

If we reverted back to amateurs, then Canada would probably run away with the gold every time. What we would get though is the excitement and enthusiasm that you see when kids are on the biggest stage of their lives. They are truly playing for their countries.

A few days ago, the crazy NBC reporters who know nothing about hockey (and who do not even cover the NHL) said the USA win over Canada was the most incredible game in hockey history. What a joke. Now, they are saying that this gold medal game was the most incredible game in hockey history....another joke. Something tells me that any game on their network is the most incredible game.

If you don't remember the 1980 game just take a look at the end of the game below. See how excited these amateurs were when they beat a professional team.

So, who is with me? Am I the only one who feels this way?

I agree. As good as todays game was, it still falls short of the 1980 gold medal game.
