National Home Show in Toronto, Ontario

By
Industry Observer

This morning we headed out early to attend the National Home Show at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto.

The show did not seem to have as many exhibits as last year's, however the ones that were there were very well set up and interesting.

We learned:

~ about the newest ways of installing granite counter tops in existing kitchens (right over top of the old countertops)

~ that soy is now being used as an insulating material

~ that systems are now being put into homes where you can control the temperature, music and more in each room at the touch of a button

~ that seventies style decor is coming back big-time

~ that more and more modular homes are being put up in OntarioNational Home Show - Toronto
~ about a lap pool small enough to fit in your house. It exerts a strong water pressure towards you from the front so you never really move forward, even though the effect is the same

~ that composite building materials are being used more and more

~ that steel roofing now comes coated with ashphalt

~that Carmichael's Sausages was all sold out of kangaroo sausage!
It was a great day and we arrived back home in time to take care of some business and then settle in to watch the gold medal hockey game between Canada and the USA.

Way to go Canada!!  Congrats on your win and congrats to the American team for their silver medal and a game very well played.

Darn Jo, I missed you as we were there too!  My poor feet were aching by the time we were done but it was a great show.  I loved a product I found called Stone-Link which was stone landscaping materials made of recycled materials but looked like the real thing at half the cost.  And the dream gardens - ooooohhhhhhhh..... spring......

Hi Marg,

Gee, too bad I missed finding you there....we went in the morning and were back home in Oakville by 2pm.

I don't recall seeing 'Stone-link' but it sounds great...

the gardens and fountains were beautiful!

What did you think of the dream home? I couldn't believe how seventies style it was.

70's style decor coming back - OMG I hope not.  Not sure what the 70's brought for Canada, but for the US, I recall appliances in your choice of color (as long as you choose between advacado green and harvest gold), shag carpet (oh yeah baby), and decorating with carpet (different color/style in each room).  Lava lamps and bean bag chairs, I can deal with, some of the other things the 70's brought us--not so much.  Thanks for the post, it looks like you had a great show.

Jo - PS Barrie wants to know if that was the IBM smart home booth in the picture. He toured their Smart Home display here in Ontario and down in Florida when it was set up in a BUS

Drick,

I agree with you....I was never a fan of the 70s.

Kathy,

No, it's not the IBM smart home display...it's a display set up just outside the dream home and it goes along with the dream home. I don't remember who set it up, but it was very fascinating.
