It is almost upon us again - a weekend of great excitement and color  in Anchorage, Alaska,  at the tail end of winter:

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Ceremonial Start , which begins

Saturday, Mar 6 10:00a at Iditarod Starting Point, Anchorage, Alaska. It is THE big winter event, and visitors from all over the world come to participate in it - as mushers, or as spectators.

The Iditarod is called  the "Last Great Race on Earth." Mushers and 1,000 dogs dash towards the Bering Sea coast through rugged remote mountain ranges and snow-capped forests. It's 1,100 miles of pure adrenaline, and it all begins in downtown Anchorage the first Saturday in March.

The offical web Iditarod web site is here

Enjoy!

From the desk of David Dee,

Marianne, that's alot of snow! Truth be told. I have not personally seen snow yet..only in the movies and from far away. One of these days. Looks like alot of fun for the dogs. :D

Hi David nd Lewis,

Thanks for your kind comments. Tomorrow, Saturday, March 6th, is the ceremonial start of the famous dog-sled race downtown Anchorage. It'll be a madhouse. Lots of In years past, snow had to be brought in, but not so this year. Should be lots of fun again. Cheers.

Alaska is famous for ... being the last frontier. I must say that i am most grateful for the wild fish we still get to eat here from unpolluted waters. Who knows, if the big wiggs who want to put in a gold mine right in sensitive country for wild fish homing-streams get their way, well - then we might as well kiss that part of nature good bye for ever. I am agitating against the Pebble Mine!

Take care. Marianne
