Do I Have To Care?

Do I Have To Care?

There are certainly things about which I do care.  Most people would probably think that those things are reasonable and about what most people would care.

For instance, most people might care about the following:

  • Where will I and my family live?  How will we pay for it?  Will we have enough money for the utilities so that we can stay warm in the winter and preserve our food throughout the year?

  • Where will I work?  Will I make enough money to support my family and myself?

  • Will my children get a good education?  Will I be able to send them to a good college?  Can I adequately prepare them for life?

  • Will there be sufficient food to keep our family healthy?  Will there be sufficient clothing for all of the seasons?

  • If we need health care, will we be able to get it without going broke?

  • When we are no longer able to work, will we have invested properly such that we are not a financial burden to anyone?

  • Will my parents and close family have all of these things?

Assuming that we do care about these things and that we take appropriate steps to address these concerns, then we should be okay.

How much should we care beyond this?

I recognize that we live in a society and that a society has needs which can benefit the society as a whole.  For instance, roads, water systems, schools, and other infrastructure may be worth society having.  Given these needs, I am even willing to pay taxes to help to cover the expense for such things.

But the question remains as to whether or not I have to care.  For instance, should I care about the following?

  • Someone did not properly manage his budget, so he now faces foreclosure.
  • Someone's child has a serious disease, which can be treated but his parents can not afford the medical care.
  • A business is poorly managed so it faces bankruptcy.
  • Someone has insufficient skills, training, and education to obtain a job.
  • Someone does not make enough money to adequately provide for his children.
  • A child is undernourished or overweight.
  • This list can continue with many desperate situations of people.

As a human being, I do have empathy for the people in these situations, whether they caused it themselves or whether they were relatively innocent victims.

The question remains.  Do I have to care?

In America, which is the land of the free, apparently I do have to care.  This freedom has been taken away from me.  The government has decided about what I should care and they will take my money in support of that cause.

Health care, you must care and more importantly you must pay.

Impending bankruptcy, you must care, and you will bail them out.

Foreclosure, you must care, and you will not let it happen.

In my view, it is freedom, freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of movement, and freedom of action, which has led this nation to its high level of prosperity.  As more and more of this freedom is taken away, the country and its people will sink further and further into an abyss so deep that they will never be able to climb out.

Ron,

A good blog which gets right to the point of two opposite sides of the debate.
