As many of you know, I am a Denver native.  Born here, raised here, live here now.  There was about a 10 year period that I was not here, when I was in my twenties, but other than that - I have been right here all along.

Surprising to many, I was not a skier until recently.  I didn't learn to ski until my oldest child was 5.  My wife is a skier and she really wanted to get the kids up on the slopes, and so I joined the skiing bandwagon.

spring skiing sol vistaAlthough I love the big resorts as well, I have become completely spoiled at the smaller, lesser known and less crowded resorts.  As far as I am concerned, they are just as good.  For a beginner or a family with young children, they are fantastic.  I personally skied for the very first time at a smaller resort, Sol Vista.  There is something to be said about skiing with relatively no lift lines, little traffic on the slopes and a very laid back atmosphere.  Another thing I enjoy about Sol Vista in particular when skiing with children, is just about every single trail finishes at the same area - if you were to get separated from a child it shouldn't be very hard to find them.

If you want to check out some of these resorts this coming winter, I highly suggest ordering the FREE Colorado Gems card.  I have been receiving this card now for three years and there are great discounts offered at some of these great resorts such as Sol Vista, Ski Cooper, Powderhorn, Arapahoe Basin, Eldora, Loveland, Monarch, and Sunlight.  In addition, there is generally a free day offered at Sol Vista and and Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin).

The Colorado Gems card is a great deal.  Its free!  Sign up now though, there is a limited number available and the last few years I think they have been gone before the slopes even open. And if you have some extra time, check out the rest of the site as well.  It is a great resource for different pass deals all over Colorado (all of the resorts), has links to sign up for weekly snow reports and will even tell you about the fabulous 5th and 6th grade Colorado student passes available.

Steve, I learned to ski at age 40 at Loveland, and used the Gems cards back then.  Now I ski primarily at Copper, but that is because I get to ski there free.  I am a volunteer guide for the Over the Hill Gang and it gives me a free pass.  it is a great group!  Come up and ski with us some time!   You only have to be 45 to be Over the Hill!

Steve, you make a good point about the lesser known resorts being just as good. And in some cases they are, in my opinion, better than the well known resorts.  I do mostly telemark and cross country skiing now. Crested Butte and Copper Mountain are a couple of places that I like.

Joanne - I still have a little time before I can join you in that group.  But not much.  Thanks for stopping by.

Leon - I really want to check out Crested Butte some time.  Laura skied there several times before we met and she really wants to go back.

I totally agree!  I learned to ski when I first moved to Colorado in the 80's.   Now I am, alas, back in New Jersey, and get out to Colorado as often as we can.  Crested Butte is one of the most beautiful, special and genuine places on earth ... with a fabulous mountain and town!

One of these days we'll be in Colorado again ... maybe Crested Butte!  And we look forward to checking out the lesser known, but certainly not lesser mountains!

Patrizia, You should definitely get out to CB again, and Colorado altogether.  They have had so much snow this year its crazy.  I think they are getting more today in that area.
