At what point does all of the information on Active Rain Become "Information Overload"?

By
Real Estate Agent with Home Real Estate

I appreciate many of the posts that I read on Active Rain. So many people have so many great things to contribute. If I took the time to read all of the posts I would definitely be in the poor house. There is just way to much to read. How do you decide what you want to read? Do you click on the Blog link in the top right hand corner of your browser and look at the latest posts? What is it about a post that grabs your attention? Do you just log-in to Active Rain because you are a Internet Addict and you figure since you are on the Internet, you may as well look at something Real Estate related?

Active Rain is a very good thing and I cannot stop singing their praises. But man, there is a lot of stuff to wade through, it is a virtual ocean of information and it is extremely overwhelming at times. When you login to Active Rain, do you have a particular subject of interest that you are investigating? Or is is a technological question that has stumped you?

What is your MO when you are on Active Rain? How does this wealth of knowledge benefit you on a daily or even weekly basis? If I was a brand new agent with limited computer skills, would you send me to Active Rain? Are you more likely to read short blogs are wordy blogs? Do you like opinion? Or are you mostly a facts and number person? Do you like it when people throw their political ideas into the mix?

If you were to judge the perfect blog post on Active Rain, what qualities would it have? Do you judge a blog post simply by the title?

I would definitely appreciate your opinion on this subject. I believe that it will make many of us better bloggers.

All the best,

I agree, Steven, it can be information overload.  I like to arrive at work at 8 a.m. and turn my computer on and get right to my social networking - including AR.  I try to limit myself to the morning (I'm not a Realtor - I'm the marketing director, so this is a big part of my job).  On AR I look at the featured blogs first and then a quick perusal of the most recently posted ones.  Whatever catches my eye I click on and read and post if I find it worthwhile.

On lazy Sunday mornings, I tend to really review AR blog posts and spend much more time commenting.

I know the first posts I'm drawn to are social networking and marketing tips.

So much to do...so little time!

Hi Steven, I set aside an hour or so each day while having my coffee in the morning or while winding down at night.  I look at the most recent blogs and scroll through until a title catches my eye ~ there is always something informative and of interest for me to read!  I occasionally search for a specific topic as well but I more like the randomness of what I'll find by just browsing the most recent blogs...this keeps me thinking outside of the box and learning about things I may have not searched for.

Steve,

Your not kidding when you say overload.  I personally look for humor and in site followed by tips either blogging or gadgets.

But no matter where i start I never know where i will end up

Enjoy your day,

It's not information overload when you use the Search toolbar. I use that ALOT when I want to find relevant information I need. Otherwise, I have my normal AR routines of first posting my stuff, then checking out other favorite bloggers then new stuff that comes on the dashboard.

It used to feel overwhelming for me but not anymore. In the end, there's only so much time I can dedicate to AR. My primary job is to sell and market myself.

There's enough diversity in ActiveRain to wet every whistle. Sort of upholds the good old American value we call 'freedom of choice'.

Hi Steven ~ Most nights I just dig in and read through the blog roll. I read tons of posts.  Now that we have to click on the post to read it I guess the title and opening lines have become more important for me. I kind of miss the old way since I used to discover a lot more new things than I do now.

Truth be told, I'm reading until I've at least done my minimum 10 comments per day. I read far more than I comment on and often comment more than 10x - but you got to draw the line somewhere.

I don't use Search that often and typically am frustrated with the results. I have better luck when I need to search here to use a search engine and include AR in the search term.

I like opinions, fun, off-topic posts, interesting real estate ideas - not terribly interested in plain old facts and numbers. And the political rantings by the usual suspects will be the end of me someday.

I would recommend AR to anybody who needs a boost real estate career-wise.  Amazing amounts to be learned here and fun to be had.

Liz

Hi Steven - Even if you spent 8-10 hours a day on ActiveRain, you probably still wouldn't be able to read and comment on all of the content. With that in mind, I would set a limit of 30-60 minutes per session. Start out reading what interests you and subscribing to bloggers you like. If you're looking for info on a specific topic, use the Search function and also look for Groups that cover that subject. And if you have questions, just ask. There are lots of Rainers ready to help; this post is a perfect example of that.
