How Do I Report a Las Vegas Area Green Pool?

Not only can a green pool be an "aesthetic" issue but it can cause health issues.

Stagnant water sources promote mosquito breeding grounds and disease.

If you live close to one of these "green pools" there are steps you can take where the green pool can be treated!

Contact the Southern Nevada Health District to report the green pool at: 702-759-1633 or fill in this form on this website.

Clark County will chemically treat the pool or use "mosquito fish" in the pool to help prevent the stagnating water source from becoming a mosquito breeding ground.

This problem has become better since several years ago but is still a problem, nonetheless!

Hi Renee,

Wish we had a that here-lots of green pools in Florida. FHA lenders are now requiring the pool be 'clear' before they will fund-just had a FHA short sale that this happened on-buyer had to have the pool clean before they would close the transaction.

I showed a home last summer that was vacant and had a pool.....with fish in it for this reason.

That is really so gross. And for those of us in the southern states, the green pools are a breeding ground for mosquitos!

That's very common over here...I once reported a vacant home that was in foreclosure...the bank refused to clean it and the neighbors were complaining. We finally had to get the sheriffs office to get someone to clean it up or empty the pool..it was the dead of summer here and rain is an everyday thing here so bugs were making the pool their new home. Total health hazard.

Great information. Green pools are definitely a health hazard and an unpredicted problem due to foreclosures.

This reminds me of that CNBC "House of Cards" special where they showed a vector control officer flying over SoCal in a helicopter and pointing out all the green pools - and we're talking HUGE pools with all the bells and whistles just sitting there languishing. I don't know why but it just made me so sad - an insane waste all around. But yes, it's a major health concern and everyone needs to get involved. Thanks for the post!

What an eye sore and nightmare that would be. Pretty safe to say you don't see a lot of pool guys making sure this is pristine. I have to think they can really reek as well.

Claude: Part of the problem is the heat can cause damage to the plaster and equipment. Lots of vacation and second homeowners here too. Imagine if you were paying someone to maintain your pool and they weren't doing so and it got emptied and caused $1000s of dollars of damage. I imagine they don't take the initiative because of liability!

Tom: Uh yes. I went into a BPO last week where it smelled like @$$hole. Also the pool pictured is my neighbors house. When they fixed it up for foreclosure they DID NOT empty the water. They just got it all cleaned up by a pool guy. I can't tell you how many times the health department was out in two years throwing chemicals and garbage in there. Every time I see someone swimming in it I shudder.

We also had significant problems with green pools when the market started declining and foreclosures were rampant. Many cities and neighbors also took action with chemicals, pool draining, and mosquito fish.
