The Kids Will Love It

It's March 4, which means that we are still in the winter season, but forget that and think spring.  For that matter, let's all start thinking about summer.

Spring is officially less than 3 weeks away.  Boys and girls have already started tossing the baseballs around and in a few short weeks the big boys will be doing their thing in major league ball yards across the country.

But my topic is about a journey and not just any journey, but the year long anticipated trip to the ocean.  If you are from Baltimore, Washington DC, or even from Pittsburgh, then your most likely choice will be Ocean City, Maryland.  Sure, other ocean spots are fine as well, but they would not include the special treat, which can be found on the way to this wonderful beach town.

Many of us like to get the trip over as quickly as possible and rightly so, since so much of the fun is with the sand, surf, and attractions of this popular destination.

But hold on a minute, slow down, and consider this small detour to an exciting adventure, which you and the kids are sure to love.

Once you have crossed the Chesapeake Bay and entered Maryland's Eastern Shore Region, you will only have about a hundred miles left to reach the beach.  But at about a third of that distance near the town of Easton is where you may wish to take a turn to the right and head for the small town of Bellevue.

Now you can take a break.  Yes, you, the kids, and even the car can relax.  It's time to enjoy the thrilling Oxford Bellevue Ferry.

This ferry system was established way back in 1683 to take commuters across the scenic Tred Avon River between Oxford and Bellevue Maryland.  It is believed to be the oldest privately operated ferry service in the country.  Once you are aboard, be sure to stand upfront so that you can watch the Maryland blue fin crabs as they float past you.  It only takes a few minutes to cross the river, but the diversion through this beautiful part of Maryland will surely be one that your children will remember for years to come.

When you reach Oxford on the other side of the river, you may want to linger for just a while.  It wont be long before you are in the stimulating environment of Ocean City, so a few extra moments in this quiet and historically charming town away from the hustle and bustle may be the perfect treat for mom and dad.

That looks like so much fun.  Maybe a trip your way this summer.

Ginger,

The shortest route to Ocean City does not include this interesting diversion.  My daughter now in her 20s went to Ocean City with some people last year and asked if they were going to take the ferry, which we had done several times during her youth.  They looked at her in bewilderment, for they had never realized that it existed.  It is so easy to go through life too fast and miss its little treasures.

Ron,

Thank you for sharing.  This looks like an interesting diversion from the regular route to OC.

Ron,

I think that I will go to Ocean City just so that I can take the ferry.
