Three cheers for MichiganEncouraging News for Michigan.

Michigan was ranked # 3 in the Nation for Corporate Expansions.

Site Selection’s annual Governor’s Cup award recognizes the state with the most new or expanded private-sector capital projects as tracked by publisher Conway Data Inc.’s New Plant Database.

Ohio was named #1 and Texas #2

Major new corporate projects for Michigan in 2009 included:

  • Advanced energy storage and solar firms like Xtreme Power
  • Clairvoyant Energy on the site of the former Ford Wixom assembly plant
  • Advanced-battery development and manufacturing firms A123 Systems (Ann Arbor),
  • Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions (Holland)
  • Dow Kokam (Midland)
  • Major expansions by General Motors and Ford for electric and hybrid vehicle production here.

Site Selection also recognized Detroit-Warren-Livonia as the nation’s No. 4 metro area with a population of one million or more for new and expanded corporate facilities.  Among metro areas with a population of between 200,000 and one million, Grand Rapids-Wyoming tied for third; Holland-Grand Haven was fifth; and Ann Arbor and Lansing-East Lansing tied for sixth.

Michigan Economic Development Corp. president and CEO Greg Main said.  “These high rankings reinforce that Michigan is a top-tier location for growing companies because of our aggressive initiatives, strong business climate and hard-working and talented workforce.”

Mmmmm.  Those Jeff Daniels ads for Michigan must be working.

It's great to read good news about the economy in Michigan.

Missy:

I'm glad that things are looking up in your neck of the woods.  Corporate expansion brings jobs.  Jobs bring people.  People buy houses.  Realtors get happy when that happens.

Good news for any state is great news for the country right now. It sounds like Michigan is getting ahead of the power curve on some green projects that arre going to benefit all of us later. Good news indeed.

Wow, Missy ~ I had no idea over here near Holland!  Don't you have some good news for Grand Rapids too?  If Michigan can just listen the Active Rain founder's blog about "retooling a flop" into a massive success...:).

We have so many magnificent natural resources here in Michigan that we above all states should be able to attract visitors and settlers without too much strain!

We need another Reese Peanut Butter Puffs cereal plant here...LOL

Missy,

What wonderful news..  So why is it happening in Michigan?

“These high rankings reinforce that Michigan is a top-tier location for growing companies because of our aggressive initiatives, strong business climate and hard-working and talented workforce.”

Most states say that they have agressive initiatives, a strong business climate and a hardworking and talented workforce.

SO WHAT IS MICHIGAN DOING THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER STATE?    I would like to put my state reps on the same type of things!

I think it must be Jeff Daniels. LOL

WE do have a very aggressive Michigan Development Corp and in Ann Arbor SPARK.

Judi, I don't know because our business tax is high but I am sure they are giving some abatements to brind companies here.

Missy...any good job news about Michigan is always, always great news; A drive between 12 & 14 mile road on Van Dyke will evidence some growth. We NEED so much more in Macomb County. Took a drive today up toward Marine City & on 23 mile road saw a closed G.M. dealership that was under 3 yrs old, that was a real shock. The splinter effect of the automotive mess-up abounds.

My  prayer is that Lansing folks also look to the small & mid-sized businesses here in Macomb Co., Oakland and parts of Detroit / Wayne that have felt the full effect of job loss. [Ford has it's West side plants that seem to be weathering this storm ]  Lansing please acknowledge the East side of the state.

Hi Missy -- Good news indeed.  I grew up in MI and it's good to see that Flint is getting a piece of the Volt business, a new plant I think I remember reading about?

Each time I read something about new jobs being created I get very excited.  Even if it's only 10 more jobs at a small business it is very exciting.

With each new job there is one less person collecting unemployment, and they are not leaving the state.

Love this report Missy, thank you.

Missy: As a native of Michigan and with family members still living in Traverse City and Flint, I am more than happy to see the news---It has been so difficult there since I can remember: I worked at Smith Bridgeman's Department Store  and Lady Davidsons (Retail--both closed) in Flint and we used to suffer during the "Change Over" lay-offs but nothing was as bad as it has been since GM closed 12 factories in Flint in the 90's.

I love Michigan, and I certainly hope the corner has been turned--FINALLY! Great post!

"Michigan" and "Good News" in the same sentence is rare lately. Good that you've brought up the positive. Then again, they do still have YOU. ;-)

Missy, that's great!  I do love your state - well, I only saw the area around Ludington, which is quite a distance from you I guess.  I spent a week there last summer and we marveled at how pretty it was.  If you ever get to the Ludington area you need to visit the House of Flavors restaurant - can't be beat!

ANYWAY - glad to hear good news for your beautiful state.  It's been hard hit, and it's time for something uplifting!

Now Michigan is a bargain. When Oklahoma came out of the energy doldrums in the 1990's, we attracted business because of low cost, and a large pool of available and motivated labor. Sounds familiar and contemporty doesn't it.

I would assume that companies are realizing that there is a trained, capable, work force, available for hire in Michigan.

Thanks for posting this encouraging economic news. It is to bad the main stream media doesn't report this information. As I type this MSNBC is putting a negative "spin" on the just released employment numbers, specifically pointing out the unemployment numbers for Detroit. think there is a hidden agenda with the news media?

9:45am • #38

Missy,

Finally, some good economic news from MI. I hope this is from "less government interference", and more business friendly initiatives, and if it is, then maybe states like CA can learn from it.  It's sad to see what has happened to the auto industry states, over the last decade.  Good luck, and hope you land more new industry.

It's good to hear some positive about MI, Missy.  The news coming out of your state has been dismal for so long that I'm sure you have a bounce in your step after reading that.

If there was any state in the country that really needs this kind of positive change, it would be Michigan. To see that not only the iron and steel, brick and mortar manufacturing is coming back, but also the forefront of the new green energy economy calling Michigan home, really gives me hope for the future of our nation!
