I've been really busy lately with little time to stop by and see how all of my friends are doing here. But I do visit whenever I can even if it's only for a few minutes here or there. I just got off the phone with one of my clients and wanted to share his observations with you.
A little background information. About two weeks ago I listed his mother's house, which was an emotional decision for all concerned. She was no longer able to live independently, even though she shared the home with another son and his family. After a few weeks of soul searching the children came to the conclusion that in her best interest she needed to be in an assisted living environment and reluctantly she signed the paperwork to begin the process of selling her home of 40+ years.
We've been preparing the house for sale, removing (flocked) wallpaper, painting, ripping up old carpet and refinishing floors, fixing plumbing issues and doing all the things necessary to maximize their investment and give her a secure future. In one of several calls today in which the son (who lives at a distance), overseeing the sale was keeping up with our progress, he mentioned to me that the last time he had a home on Long Island he sold it himself. Being in sales himself, he told me that he always thought of real estate agents as bandits. I was taken aback as he continued to speak. His premise was that "we" sit at a few open houses, put a few ads in the paper and then sit back and wait for a big check.
About to be offended, I was at the point of opening my mouth when his final words were, "but you've totally changed my mind about Realtors(R), you've gone way above and beyond anything I might have expected. I'll never look at it the same way again." His kind words were a gift we don't often get these days and one I will treasure.
