No it is not the latest romantic movie out of Hollywood. It is true we have two historic covered bridges in Greenbrier County. They are some of the true gems of our beautiful countryside. Both bridges are listed on the National Historic Registure and one is still in use today, allowiing vehicles to drive through the unique structure.

Herns Mill Covered Bridge- Lewisburg

Herns Mill Bridge is located just out of Lewisburg. Erected in 1879 Herns Mill Bridge is a 54-foot long covered bridg. It spans Milligans Creek about four miles from Lewisburg. This bridge is a queenpost truss design bridge and there seems to be a little discepancy in the date the bridge was built. Some articles say 1884 for the date of construction. The bridge was bought by the county in 1884 for a total of $800.00 and in 2000 the bridge was reconstructed for over $500,000.00.

If you are in the Lewisburg area you can find Herns Mill Bridge just a short drive from downtown Lewisburg. Take Rt. 60 out of Lewisburg(West) towards the new Lewisburg Public Library. From downtown travel to Muddy Creek Mountian Road Rt. 40. You will pass Morlunda Farms and the bridge is down the road about a half a mile.

The second covered bridge is Hokes Mill Covered Bridge. Located near Ronceverte it is a truely spectacular structure. The covered bridge sits over Second Creek and is just a stones throw away from the Grenbrier River and the Monroe County line. Unlike the Herns Mill Bridge the Hokes Mill bridge is no longer being used for automobile traffic. The bridge has been reconditioned and restored in 2001 for close to $400,000.00 and was originally purchaed for $200.00. Hokes Mill Bridge is 12 foot wide and 81.5 feet long it was originally constructed in 1899.

Hokes Mill Bridge-Ronceverte WV

Hokes Mill Bridge can be accesed several ways. You can drive to Roneverte and turn down the River Road, just after you cross the Greenbrier River Bridge. Turn right on River Road and stay in this road until you come to an interesction. Stay straight and pass the churches continue down the road and the bridge will be on the left. You can also come off of Rt. 219 on to Hokes Mill Road and follow it to the interesection and turn left. You will pass the churches and the bridge will again be on the left.
