Virginia ~ First State To Adopt Honor And Remember Flag

By
Real Estate Agent

Yesterday it was announced that the state of Virginia is the first state to adopt the Honor and Remember Flag.  The flag will be the official remembrance flag flown proudly throughout the state.

  • We are all familiar with the POW flag from the VietNam era.  While we honor our nations heroes on Memorial Day, we have not adopted a symbol to represent their service and sacrifice.

Honor and Remember Flag
The Honor and Remember flag grew from a grass roots effort of one military family whose son was killed in Iraq.

The flag is designed to honor those who served in all US wars.

The movement to have this flag adopted as a national symbol started more than a year ago.  Virginia is the first state to pass legislation.

There is currently a house bill H.R. 1034 to make this flag our national symbol of service.

  • Please read more about this effort, mission statement and sign the petition.

Interesting as I always thought of the American Flag as the one we used to honor those who have given their lives in service of their country.  It is what we receive when a loved one is buried at Arlington National Cemetary or at any military or civilian service related funeral.  The new flag has meaning but should never be used to replace the American Flag as a rememberence of those who have given the ultimate sacrafice.

Wonderful flag - to honor and remember all those who shed their blood to keep America free!

Thanks Virginia - well done!

Wallace,  It is a beautiful flag and very symbolic.  I think it should be incorporated into police uniforms and other security personnel.  It's a beautiful way to express our appreciation.

I bet you are right, it will be banned at the Olympics.

Roy,  The flag is new.  There is a bill in the House to adopt it.  I think we should all support it.

The legislation was just passed in Va in the last day or so.  I'm sure we will see these flags shortly.

Cindy,  As displayed it will go underneath the American flag. It will not replace it. Traditionally the Stars and Stripes are presented by our government only at the death of a service person. If you notice the flag incorporates the tri-folded flag to symbolize the death of a service member.

We have no symbol to remember service personnel both alive and dead who served in our military.  We have a flag to remember the POW's.

Nick,  I think it is a great way to remember.  I saw an interview with the man who designed the flag.  He lost his son in Iraq.  A lot of thought went into the symbolism.

It is a great flag. I am going to get one and fly it with my American flag and my POW/MIA flag.

Kevin,  I think we will also.  I hope this passes as a national symbol.

Bonnie,

Great job, Virginia! How appropriate for the Commonwealth to do this since they were the one to introduce the resoultion for independence. How do we get one? :)
