Selling Homes With Bad Dogs Can Be Difficult

By
Real Estate Agent with BCR Realtors 262359

Selling Homes with bad dogs can be difficult to say the least!  Over the course of any agent's career they are bound to come into contact with a bad dog or two..or even three like I have.... Or at least these three are the most memorable.

Here are my 3 Worst Dog Events...in ascending order

#3.   The conniving Chihuahua. This little tyke manage to get a piece of my calf. It was a set up .    I knocked  on a client's door. I heard what I thought was my client say come in so I did . I walked in and said hello and the next thing I knew this snarling crazy Chihuahua was hanging on my calf....then I heard a parrot say "They're here , they're here!" My client wasn't at home and I realized the parrot had said "come in!"  I still think he and the dog had a set -up going on to entrap humans!

#2. The sneak attack German.   I called in advance to preview this home. The owners didn't tell me they had a German Shepherd in the house. I got there and rang the doorbell. No one answered so I entered. I immediately spotted a large German Shepherd in the hallway and as he bared his teeth In knew I was doomed , so I executed  an instant about face and ran for the fence! As I was going over the fence I realized the dog had my boot in his mouth . Fortunately I cleared the fence but ended up on the other side with only one boot.

#3 My Worst Dog In Real Estate  This "Devil Dog" would pee on customers! The owners asked me to be present at all showings and to put the dog in  the garage before showing. It was bad enough he peed in the home as it smelled ripe. But we all try to help. So I would put him in the garage , show the home, then transfer him to the yard so as to show the garage then go in the yard last with customers..  Well as I walked some clients past the dog he decided to mark his territory on a customer's leg. They didn't buy the home.

Have you had any bad dog experiences in Real Estate?

Trey, my experiences with "bad dogs" in real estate all came about when we were selling our house about 18 months ago.  We have miniature schnauzers who likes to bite, so every time our house was shown (it took six months to sell), my poor wife would have to load "the boys" in car and drive around for awhile.  Most of this period took place in the summer, so she couldn't leave them alone in the car.

Hi Trey, I had a tenant call me to say a showing was scheduled and she couldn't get away from work to pick up her dog, so would I get him for her.  I had met the dog a number of times and thought this wouldn't be a problem.  When I opened the door, the dog was barking and then bolted before I could get the leash on him.  We ended up spending a couple hours trying to track it down before the owner arrived and was able to.

My worst experience is cats,  I've very allergic and have had to corral a few who escaped only to end up sneezing and itching for the next hour.  Not very impressive to a buyer.

I have been bitten and chased by some bad dogs while visiting properties.  Dogs seem to love my legs.

You are a saint to take a listing where you had to take the dog to the garage and then to the yard to get the home shown ---- we don't do dogs.

I was trapped in a kitchen once and had to hop up on the counter. The dog wouldn't let me down and I had to leap out the window and run across the yard praying the dog wouldn't go out the doggie door and get me while I was still in the yard.

And, yes, I once took a listing where I had to be present at all showings to keep the doggie happy and occupied in the back yard.

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh. I'm still new in the business(2yrs), and haven't had a bad dog experience. I know it won't be funny when I actually do!

As a home inspector dogs can be an issue.  I have been bitten twice by dogs that "don't bite".

Sometimes dogs are left in a cage for the home inspection.  There is nothing worse then three hours of loud barking to irritate the homebuyer's nerves.

My position is that the dogs should be gone for the home inspection.

Oh, Trey, I hope those weren't for real. If so, you've had more than your share. There's nothing funny about dog bites, but the parrot who invited you in just cracks me up.

Yes, I just had an Open House with 3 dogs in the backyard barking the entire time.  Only once did they hush and that only lasted for about 10 minutes.  I talked to them, fed them, shushed them, everything I could think of.  No luck. How am I going to sell this home? Help!

i have had some dogs in the garage during showings that i thought would break the door down. But worse than having a dog bolt as you had..  I once had the HORSE get out when i was showing the barn.

I did get it back in!

But i was pretty worried for a while.
