When All Else Fails.......RTFM! (read the friendly manual)

I'm new to blogging, unless you want to count subscribing to numerous BBS's in the late 80's and posting to forums, message boards and running several different MSN and Yahoo Groups throughout the years as kind of a "pre-blogging".

I don't even remember how I stumbled on to Activerain.  I think it was an article that I read on Inman News, but it doesn't really matter, I'm here and I'm hooked.  I'm laughing before I even type this.....I'm the kind of person when confronted with the task of putting together some piece of furniture or installing software that I just skim the instructions and then wing it.  Most of the time it works out just fine; I'm much better at the software with no help than the furniture building, but the point is, I am definitely not the type to sort and count out all those little nuts and bolts first.  This drove my ex crazy by the way.

So I sign up for AR having no clue what to expect and instantly I'm sucked in.  OK, these are two of my favorite things rolled up in one (real estate and creative computer stuff) and I can do it all with my PJ's on.  I'm off and running and never ever once bothered to read anything about blogging, or anything about AR, nadda, nothing.  I'm just reading blogs, typing and having a good old time.  My points are growing, I'm linking my websites, I'm inviting people, I'm posting, I'm commenting and heck I'm having more fun than when I first tried instant messaging.

So yesterday, I had to drive to Hollywood during rush hour and as the cars are inching along on the 101, I have time to think, and it dawns on me, "I never read the instructions".  What the heck am I supposed to be doing?  Can consumers see my posts?  I wrote some blogs that are cool for someone in the business to read, but what about my clients or my future clients?  My head is spinning....I did a few benign posts to Localism that were meant for consumers, but the rest of my posts were really for professionals.

The second I get home, I run to my computer and RTFM!  And hey, there is so much "AR help" information that I cannot believe I missed this stuff.  There is the entire Newbie group that I joined on my first day but never got around to reading.  There are blogs on how to write posts, ideas for subjects, and all sorts of tips and tricks.  I was blown away.  Hmm, now I'm back tracking and re-reading my blog to make sure that it's really OK.  Is my meme to much of an expose'?  Is admitting that I have a shy side bad for business?

After my initial panic and mini AR blog crash course, I've decided not to change anything.  What I did is take my posts and edit them slightly and then publish them to my personal real estate blog which is geared more to consumers. This is the blog that I linked to my website.  How do the rest of you handle this?  Do you write two versions of the same post if it's a little too technical for a consumer, or do you just post some things to AR and some to your regular blog?

I usually write different posts for the different blogs.  Could be the same basic topic, but tilted differently.  You don't want the search engines to consider them duplicate content, that will hurt you.  So have different titles and mix up the message a bit.

Often I just post to one or the other, but once in a while I post to all three in completely different versions of the same topic.

For most of us, reading the manual is like asking for driving directions. Where's the adventure in that?

I'm still figuring that out. I know duplicates will kill you. It's called cloning in SEO language. I'm currently running a few different blogs and looking to trim some fat. I like the points system because it's competitive and that's always fun to set benchmarks and goals. Blogging on my own site seems fun, but you never really know who's going to read it, if anyone at all. And then AR, well it might just be too big that the only people I interact with are other Realtors and no clients from my area. Time will tell how I handle it, but for now, I think I'm addicted to AR. I've been bouncing around the ideal of forwarding my personal site to my AR profile, but then I think I'd lose points for taking down my AR link exchange. =(

What a great post! Be You! Who you are shines through and it all works out in the end! I love Active Rain, the points thing is so much fun! I love going for rewards. I love to write so blogging is a great fit for me. I am starting a new blog that is our stand alone blog. I will see how that goes. AR already has good google rankings so I am here to utilize that in Localism posts as well. Katerina

Tracey, your enthusiasm really gets me.  Your wording, "hooked" , wow, how I remember those same words, and one of my favorite sayings is Active Rain is addicting.  I love your posts, you are definitely a good fit, but then who is not a good fit on Active Rain, we all have something to contribute even if we all do not agree with the subject.  That is what makes it so great a place to come to.

Thank you for being here, I look forward to reading many more of your newsy posts.

Tracey, great post. It was nice to read it first thing this morning.

Initially I was writing both 'members only' and localism or consumer posts. The localism posts were then also posted at my real estate blogs that I write about my area. I hadn't realized tht duplicate content was going to harm my blogs.  Lately I have mostly just been posting both kinds of articles here at AR and have been neglecting my community real estate blogs. There are only so many hours in a day !!

I can see this is an issue I am going to have to get cracking on though since I do not want my local real estate blogs to die.  So many taos, so little time.

Your blogs fit right in. You followed a similar path to myself when you joined. I just learned about the newbie group and all of the guidline posts a few weeks ago and I have been at AR for almost 2 months. I don't think we've suffered at all due to taking this route.

Addiction to Activerain happened quickly for me also. I stumbled across it by accident just like you. I believe it was while I was searching for inspiration to write my newsletter and I clicked into a blog from a Google alert on real estate. Where had I been that I had not heard of this? When I joined it was only at 21,000 members.

I always take a critical eye to my posts to make sure they are not offensive or unkind. Any post to Localism really gets the going over a few more times. I think that if anyone follows your blog posts they get a view into who you really are. Make the view a spectacular one!
